Rivals Season 2 has finally been confirmed - here's everything we know
Following the roaring success of Rivals earlier this year, fans have been wondering if season two is coming – and now, Disney+ has confirmed that it is.
Based on the second book in Jilly Cooper's The Rutshire Chronicles, Rivals is set in the fictional Englishcounty of Rutshire and depicts the cut-throat world of 1980s independent television. Packed full of wit, romantic entanglements, sex and unforgettable characters, the eight-part season one featured a stellar cast including Alex Hassell, David Tennant, Aidan Turner, Katherine Parkinson, Danny Dyer and Emily Atack.
We instantly binge-watched the adaptation when it landed on Disney+ on 18 October, and if you're anything like us you're no doubt desperate to know what comes after that brilliant, nail-biting cliffhanger in the final episode.
With the first series only exploring the first half of Jilly's hit novel, we suspected that a return to Rutshire would be coming soon, so here's everything we know so far about Rivals season two, including updates on the release date, plot and cast...
Will there be a Rivals season 2?
Yes! Disney+ announced on Wednesday 4 December that Rivals season two has been greenlit. Jilly Cooper, who is once again executive producing, said: “Nearly 40 years after my novel Rivals was published, I’ve adored seeing the world fall in love with my beloved characters – Rutshire’s finest – and it has been a fairytale come true working with Happy Prince and Disney+ on the first season. I’m orgasmic with excitement and cannot wait for the return of my superhero Rupert Campbell-Black and the rest of the characters in season two!"
Lee Mason, Executive Director of Scripted Originals for EMEA Disney+, added: “It’s been phenomenal seeing the reaction to Dame Jilly Cooper’s Rivals – this autumn’s most talked about series. We’re thrilled that existing fans of the novels, alongside those new to the Cooperverse, have taken the series to their hearts. I can’t wait to get back to Rutshire and see what exciting drama the Happy Prince team have in store for season two – bring on more romance, betrayal, and shoulder pads!"
Rivals Season 2 release date
There's been no word yet on exactly when Rivals season two will land, but with so many A-listers on the cast, we can imagine it may take some time to align their schedules to film a second series. Rest assured we'll let you know as soon as we do!
Rivals Season 2 plot
The first series of Rivals focuses on the longstanding rivalry that comes to a head between Rupert Campbell-Black (Alex Hassell) and Tony Baddingham (David Tennant).
Disney+ says: "It is 1986 and Britain is booming. Rivals dives headfirst into the cut-throat world of TV where hairdos are big and ambitions are even bigger. Deals are brokered in boardrooms, as well as bedrooms. Nobody can be sure who will come out on top. With every man and woman out only for themselves, can true love really blossom in this highly anticipated adaptation of Jilly Cooper’s bestselling Rutshire Chronicles novel?"
So, what could we expect from a second season? Well, if you've read the book the show is based on, you'll know exactly what could happen in the second half. For now, we'll avoid any spoilers...
