The Duchess of Cambridge has unveiled a hidden talent as she and her husband shared a thank you message to the people they met during their trip to Scotland.

Kate shared her sketch from 2002 of St Andrews, where she and William met, styled as a postcard with a heartfelt message from the couple as they arrived back home.

Kate, 39, is known for her love of photography and studied History of Art when she was a student at the university, and clearly a passion for sketching followed.

The couple travelled the length and breadth of Scotland, visiting communities in Orkney, Edinburgh, and retracing their steps in St Andrews, even returning to their old favourite fish and chip shop for lunch.

Sharing the postcard of thanks on Instagram, they added the caption: "To the people, communities and organisations we visited and heard from; and those who stopped to wave and make our return to Scotland so special - thank you!

The trip started as a solo venture for William, 38, who went to Edinburgh on Friday, 21 May where he conducted some of his duties as Lord High Commissioner of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland.

The role was given to him by the Queen but the plan for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to follow his appointment with a trip north of the border was scuppered by COVID-19 last year.

Instead the trip took place as restrictions eased, with William combining the work on his grandmother's behalf with visits reflecting his royal work.

He watched the Scottish Cup final with NHS responders, and visited Spartans FC where he heard about schemes to help players and staff with their mental health.

Kate joined her husband on Monday and together they helped cook meals for vulnerable families in Edinburgh, travelled to Orkney for their first official joint visit, and then walked memory lane in their university town of St Andrews.

They were spotted leaving a restaurant on Tuesday night where they had enjoyed a date night and stopped to speak to residents of Anstruther in between their fish and chips and ice cream on Wednesday.

They then hosted NHS workers for a special screening of Cruella, two days before it was released in UK cinemas.

And there were plenty of opportunities for the competitive couple to show that side of their relationship, as they raced each other on land yachts on the beach and then became Team Duke and Team Duchess during some tennis games with children at the Craiglockhart tennis centre in Edinburgh.

The trip came to a close on Thursday with seed planting in a park in the Scottish capital, a speech from William and a beating retreat by The Massed Pipes and Drums of the Combined Cadet Force in Scotland.

William and Kate were reunited with their three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, after the trip, as the trio did not join them for the visit.

George and Charlotte, who attend Thomas's in Battersea, are now on their half-term break, which the family often spends in Norfolk at Anmer Hall.
