David Tennant and Alex Kingston have officially returned to the world of Doctor Who.

The British actors have reprised their respective roles as the 10th incarnation of the Time Lord and River Song for a new audio series produced by Big Finish.

This three-part adventure will reunite the pair for the first time since 2008 episodes “Silence in the Library” and “Forest of the Dead”.

Both characters will be thrust together from separate time periods in the series, leaving Tennant’s Doctor confused as to why River is being so “flirty” with him.

“What’s fascinating about this relationship is that they’re both at different stages of it and my Doctor is baffled by her,” Tennant said of the series.

“Over the course of these three stories he certainly softens towards her ways. It’s an interesting thing to play.”

He described it as “wonderful” and “a treat” to be able to return for the audio series.

Kingston added: “‘I thought that it was a lovely, sad, encapsulated story arc, where she sacrifices herself and you never really fully get to know what happened between them.”

The next televised episode of Doctor Who will air this Christmas, and will see Jodie Whittaker’s Time Lord face off against the Daleks with help from John Barrowman’s Captain Jack Harkness.
