A sequel to the iconic 2006 movie, The Devil Wears Prada, is reported to be in the works at Disney.

First reported by Puck, Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt have reportedly signed up to reprise their roles as stone cold editor-in-chief Miranda Priestly and her harried assistant Emily Charlton, respectively. Anne Hathaway has yet to confirm whether or not she will also return, although we were recently treated to a reunion of the three actresses at this year's SAG Awards.

Fans of the iconic noughties film have longed for a sequel ever since the original film's release, and as we approach the film's 20th anniversary (it was released 18 years ago) it looks more likely than ever.

The original film's scriptwriter, Aline Brosh McKenna, director, David Frankel, and producer, Wendy Finerman, are also all in talks to reunite for the sequel.

Puck reported that the storyline currently being discussed would focus on the Anna Wintour-esque Miranda Priestly "at the end of her career, facing the decline of traditional magazine publishing." With dwindling budgets, the withering editor-in-chief is "forced to go head-to-head with her former assistant, Blunt’s Emily Charlton, now a high-powered executive at a Kering or LVMH-style luxury group, whose advertising dollars Priestly desperately needs."

There is no mention of Anne Hathaway's character, Andy Sachs, and the actress hasn't yet been confirmed whether she'll join her other returning cast members. It would make quite the U-turn for Hathaway, who has been openly dismissive of the idea of a The Devil Wears Prada sequel in the past.

Just a few months ago, Hathaway told E! News, "I don't think a continuation of that story is probably ever gonna happen."

And in 2022, the actress expressed her doubts on American talk show The View: "I don’t know if there can be [a sequel]," she said. “I just think that movie was in a different era. Now everything’s gone so digital and that movie is centred around the concept of producing a physical thing and it’s just, it’s just very different."

For now, at least, we can enjoy the fact that Elton John's The Devil Wears Prada musical is hitting the West End this October.
