According to a new study, women who don heavy makeup are less likely to be perceived as good leaders.
Researchers at Abertay University in Dundee, Esther James and Shauny Jenkins, discovered a correlation between the amount of makeup a woman wears and a colleague’s perception of her leadership ability.
Participants were asked to analyse a series of images which featured the same woman with and without makeup.
Each participant was then asked to judge sixteen face-pairs before deciding which woman would be a better leader, based on their image.
Findings indicate that both men and women viewed the women wearing more makeup in a negative light therefore believe she would be a poor leader in the workplace.
Dr Christopher Watkins of Abertay’s Division of Psychology, who led the study, revealed, “This research follows previous work in this area, which suggests that wearing makeup enhances how dominant a woman looks.”
He added: “While the previous findings suggest that we are inclined to show some deference to a woman with a good looking face, our new research suggests that makeup does not enhance a woman’s dominance by benefitting how we evaluate her in a leadership role.”
