Dead by Daylight star Zoey Alexandria dies at 29 after rare brain swelling as fans pay tribute
Dead by Daylight voice star Zoey Alexandria, also known as Zoey Wenforf, has tragically passed away at the tender age of 29 due to a rare form of brain swelling.
The sad news was confirmed on a GoFundMe page set up to help with her medical bills. The page revealed that Zoey, best known for voicing The Unknown in Dead by Daylight, succumbed to paediatric acute-onset neuropsychiatric syndrome (PANDAS), a type of encephalitis uncommon in adults.
The fundraising page also disclosed that she had an immunoglobulin G deficiency and chronic strep infections, making her more susceptible to illness. The campaign, launched in March 2022, aimed to raise $10,000 to support her as her health conditions prevented her from working.
Fans of the popular horror game were quick to express their sorrow following the announcement. One fan penned in an online tribute: "Found her from her voice acting The Unknown. It feels surreal that this even happened. I want to extend my condolences to the family of Zoey. She was taken too soon. Rest in peace.", reports the Mirror.
Another added: "A real shame to be waking up to this. Zoey may be no longer with us physically, but her soul has been immortalised in the artwork that she dedicated herself towards."
The gaming community is mourning the loss of a beloved voice actress, Zoey Alexandria, as shared by the official Dead by Daylight Twitter/X account: "Like many in our community, we're deeply saddened to learn that The Unknown's voice actress, Zoey Alexandria, has passed away."
"We welcomed her into our world, and her talent shone brightly through her performance. Our thoughts are with her loved ones in this difficult time."
Zoey lent her voice to the enigmatic character of the Unknown in the game, which targeted both male and female players. Her versatile voice acting represented both genders, but it wasn't without controversy.
Initially, the game was embroiled in a transphobia scandal. Alexandria, who was a trans woman, accused the game's producers of transphobia. She claimed they deceived her into voicing what she considered a 'stereotype.
Reflecting on the experience, she said: "I was told at the time I was voicing the character that there was no model and that the creature was supposed to be amorphous. They had no model design before I recorded my lines. So it's my assumption that the design team took my medical history, and my ability to use multiple voices as an opportunity to create character models that encapsulate my medical history as trans and capitalise on catering to the transphobic community."
"I was tricked into voicing a stereotype. Since yesterday, I have been virally harassed for being trans, by thousands of people."
A spokesperson from Behaviour Interactive stated that the Dead by Daylight community " should be a safe place where EVERYONE can find a true sense of belonging". .
The company also condemned players who sent abuse to a voice actor after an in-game character voiced by the person was reworked.
