The Day of the Jackal season 2 is happening! News and updates
The Day of the Jackal, starring Eddie Redmayne and Lashana Lynch, is an adaptation of the 1971 novel by Frederick Forsyth, only with a very different ending. After 10-episodes of high tension, the story of cat and mouse finally came to an end. But it's not necessarily over for good, because a season two of The Day of the Jackal has already been confirmed! Here's everything we know about the future episodes.
Wait, what happens at the end of The Day of the Jackal season 1?
The Day of the Jackal came to an end on the 12th December 2024, in a tense shootout at Charles's home in Cadiz, Spain. When he returned home from assassinating UDC, he discovered that Nuria and his son were gone, and instead was met by Bianca and Vince, who were on a mission to kill him.
Instead, he managed to outsmart them, and shot them both in his house, after they had inadvertently shot his brother-in-law. The next scene then led us to believe Charles/The Jackal was dead, when he was involved in a car crash. Only he reappears for a meeting with businesswoman Zina Jansone (Eleanor Matsuura), who tells him she's got a new job for him.
When was The Day of the Jackal season 2 confirmed?
On the 22nd November 2024 - before season one had even come to an end - The Hollywood Reporter revealed season two had been commissioned, with the show's executive producer Gareth Neame explaining this was part of the reason they kept the Jackal alive.
“Of course, we’re in the business of series television, and there was the idea of sustainability for a returning series," he explained. "So it was a decision we made quite early on, that we wanted in our version for the law enforcement person to be killed and for our assassin to go on."
Who's in The Day of the Jackal season 2 cast?
Well, as we now know, MI5's Bianca (played by Lashana Lynch) and her associate Vince (Nick Blood) were killed in the final episode of season one, alongside a long list of bodies that both the Charles and Bianca left in their wake - including Ulle Dag Charles (Khalid Abdalla), Alison, Norman and more.
We know The Day of the Jackal can't exist without, well, the Jackal, so we expect Eddie Redmayne to be back, while it's likely Zina Jansone (Eleanor Matsuura) will be back with a new job for him. Other characters that could return include:
When will The Day of the Jackal season 2 be released?
So far, nothing has been said about a potential release date for a season two - we're not even sure if they're working on it yet. Filming for the first season took roughly seven months, and then 12 months in post-production, before he came out in autumn 2024.
Following that pattern, it's likely we can expect the show to come out in 2026, providing there are no scheduling conflicts for the actors involved.
What could happen in The Day of the Jackal season 2
Executive producer Neame has dropped some major hints about what season 2 could involve - namely, Charles trying to find his wife and child, who have walked out on him after finding out the truth about his career.
"There’s some serious bit of unfinished business," he explained to THR, while executive producer Nigel Marchant added, "We actually know what his priority is, in terms of what his next mission will be. He’s trying to find [his family]. Whether he does or not, let’s see."
Sounds ominous!
