David and Victoria Beckham floor fans as they wear iconic purple wedding outfits 25 years on
David Beckham and wife Victoria have shown their unique sense of style will always be in fashion after the footballer shared a recent photo of the two of them posing in the iconic purple outfits by Antonio Berardi that they wore at their wedding 25 years ago.
Captioning the pic with the words, “Look what we found…” and a laughing emoji, the photo shows the couple holding hands and sitting on thrones as they did on their wedding day. Victoria is in her purple wedding dress with red lining and red flowers and is wearing strappy silver sandals, and David is in a matching purple suit, complete with purple suede shoes and a purple corsage.
Fans were quick to praise the photo. One wrote: "That's my royal family," while another agreed, saying: "Going to tell my kids these are the Queen and King of England." A third commented: "This is iconic," and a fourth remembered "When you bought @ok_mag that week just for the photos," referring to the fact that the Beckhams' wedding photos were published exclusively in OK!.
One cheeky fan did ask: "Did either need any alterations?" but didn't get a reply.
David has previously questioned his choice of outfit for his wedding. He told Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs: “I look like the guys out of Dumb & Dumber when they went to that party and wore those ridiculous outfits. I even had a top hat in purple. Unbelievable. What was I thinking?”
The couple first wore the memorable outfits on July 4, 1999 at their wedding at the 15th century Luttrellstown Castle in Ireland. The wedding was estimated to have cost £500,000 and featured their then four month old son Brooklyn as ring bearer, and David’s teammate Gary Neville as best man. They only had 29 guests to the main ceremony, including Spice Girls Mel B, Mel C and Emma Bunton, but invited more than 230 for the reception, where they had Frank Sinatra’s It Had to be You as their first dance.
The purple outfits weren’t the only ones the couple wore on the day. Victoria, who was 25 at the time, wore a £10,000 crown and an ivory strapless Vera Wang wedding dress, while David, who was 24, wore an ivory and cream suit for the ceremony. They later changed into the purple ensembles, and baby Brooklyn had his own matching outfit, too, complete with a little purple cowboy hat.
Twenty five years on, the couple are now also parents to Romeo, 21, Cruz, 19 and Harper, 12. Earlier this year, Victoria spoke about why their relationship has lasted to Spain’s Elle Magazine .
“My husband is an inspiration to me. Do we look like the couple seen in the Netflix documentary? Yes. We like to have fun, chat, dance, drink. And laugh at each other. That’s what it takes to be happy. I believe a lot in laughter, family and friendship. I realise that we have become a model. People like to see relationships that last.”
