Daniel Craig's Glasses Are the Ultimate Middle-Aged Style Hack
“A good trick as you get older is to get a thick pair of glasses that have a dark frame,” the fashion design Tom Ford told me in 2013.
“Everything else can droop and slide but that pair of dark glasses stays sharp and crisp. Look at Cary Grant. Look at Vidal Sassoon.”
Ford was 53 then, and, like now – and quite possibly until the end of time – in impeccable nick.
But his particular piece of style advice isn’t hard to decode.
If you’ve hit an age when everything on your face is starting to soften, a good way to pull things into focus is with a huge pair of fuck-off glasses.
Much has been made of the recent makeover of Daniel Craig (aged 56, also in quite good shape).
The whiskers, the long hair, the even longer Armani suits, the Loewe everything else. It’s not been for everyone. “Daniel Craig looks like he’s about to tell you her ceramics are worthless on the Antiques Roadshow,” reckoned someone on Twitter/X.
But you can’t say this isn’t a man who looks like he’s enjoying himself.
As he travels the globe promoting Queer in a succession of increasingly fashion-forward looks, one constant has been his rotating arsenal of jumbo eyewear – some with thick frames, some without, some with tinted lenses, and some that are proper sunglasses.
The point is: they’re always eye-catching.
For anyone wanting to learn a simple style trick from Daniel Craig and/or Tom Ford – and you could certainly do worse – below is a gallery of eyewear has worn over the last few weeks.
