Crayola Finally Brings Back Retired Color After Customer Demands
Nine years, a few change.org campaigns and many reddit threads later. Crayola is finally bringing the much-loved, bright yellow crayon named Dandelion back into rotation.
It will be part of a limited box collection of eight retired colors, including Blizzard Blue, Magic Mint, and Mulberry, all of which were retired in 2003, and Orange Red, Violet Blue, Lemon Yellow, and Raw Umber, which were retired in 1990.
"As a first in the history of Crayola, we could not be more excited to bring back this beloved Limited Edition color collection that will give kids even more opportunities to colorfully put their imagination into action," says Victoria Lozano, Crayola’s Chief Marketing Officer. "Color has such a personal connection for kids of all ages. It plays a pivotal role in inspiring creativity, which is an integral catalyst for educational, emotional and cognitive growth. At Crayola, we celebrate the enduring value of childhood creativity to help kids reach their full potential, and we look forward to seeing the Limited Edition colors inspire even more creative moments for our fans."
The limited edition box will be widely available come spring, until the end of 2025. And while you're out there shopping and antiquing, be on the lookout for a box of vintage crayons. An original early 1900s Binney & Smith eight-pack box of Crayola crayons in mint condition goes for a lot of green—around $500! A 24-pack from the 1950s (like the one shown above) is identifiable by its arched logo and trademark symbol placement and worth around $20. If it’s a mint condition box that contains some retired colors, however, the price may rise to $75. There’s a lot to learn about the history of crayons!
