This Cozy Brown Rug Has Worked Wonders in Transforming My Living Room

Let me just say I never thought I’d be someone with a dark-colored living room rug. I’ve been drawn to lighter colored jutes, sisal, and seagrass carpets for many years and have used them in my various apartments. It’s no secret, though, that lighter rugs accumulate dirt quicker and show stains faster. Earlier this year, I found my light jute living room rug, while beautiful, just wasn’t holding up well due to everyday wear and tear. I knew that it was time for a change, and as someone who loves to tweak my decor regularly, I wasn’t mad at the situation.

I had also painted my living room walls a deep navy blue, Benjamin Moore’s Midnight (2131-20) last fall, and was craving a darker floor covering fitting for this new, moody vibe. Since I already have a lot of accessories and patterned pieces in my space, I decided a solid rug would bring the most balance to the space. I love an eclectic aesthetic, but at the same time, I don’t enjoy rooms where everything is competing for attention.

Having had good luck with Safavieh rugs in the past, I decided to check out the brand’s offerings and came across a beautiful brown sisal at an excellent price point (just a little over $300 for a very sizable 8 foot by 10 foot rug). Unlike some area carpets, which take weeks or months on end to ship or require white glove delivery, this one shipped free from Walmart and showed up at my doorstep in just a couple of days.

As soon as I laid the rug down in my living room, I was thrilled. The brown color adds such a richness to my space and really ties everything together. It’s helped to camouflage dust and specks that inevitably make their way into my space, and is easy to vacuum, too. I love the solid border that gives the piece a finished edge. It adds so much polish and makes the rug feel like it truly grounds the furniture in space.

If you choose to order a brown rug for your space, consider pairing it with lighter colored furnishings as I did. My sofa is beige, which helps prevent my space from feeling too cave-like between the brown underfoot and the blue on the walls. I also get a lot of natural light in my living room, which works wonders to brighten up the space and keep things light and airy despite all of my moody decor.

Ready to go all in with this Safavieh piece? I can see why. It still basically looks brand new, and it’s fairly soft to the touch, especially compared to other jute or sisal carpets that can be a little bit scratchy and stiff. It comes in tons of different sizes, ranging from hallway runners to an expansive 11 foot by 15 foot option. And you can find a handful of neutral colorways, too, if the brown feels a little bit too rich for you. There’s truly something for everyone!
