Following on from a weekend of heavy rain, wind and flooding from Storm Bert, our wet gardens are attracting one familiar garden pest.

Slugs are more active in wetter conditions – so, if you’re tackling any November gardening jobs, you might come across quite a few.

"Slugs can stay active all year round, unlike snails which go dormant in winter," Hayley Jones, entomologist at the RHS previous told Country Living.

This year gardeners have experienced more slugs than usual, as milder temperatures and rainy periods provided the ideal conditions for the pests to thrive. So much so, that the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) was inundated with inquiries about slugs and snails at this year’s Chelsea Flower Show.

If you want to banish slugs from your garden and protect your plants there are a few natural ways to do so without harming them – with one expert-recommended method costing just 55p.

According to Gardeners World, a homemade garlic spray could be the key to keeping the pests off your flowers and vegetable patch – especially during rainy periods.

"Take two full bulbs of garlic and add them a saucepan containing two litres of water," the publication suggests.

"Boil gently until soft and then use a fork to squash the bulbs down, releasing as much of the garlic and juice as possible. Pour the solution through a sieve to remove the skins.”

Gardeners should dilute the solution by adding two tablespoons of the garlic to around five litre of water. Then, spray or water plants with the DIY mix once a week, or after rainfall.

With garlic costing around 55p in most supermarkets, it’s an affordable trick that is a natural slug deterrent – so it won’t harm the creatures or damage the balance of nature in a garden.

However, this isn't a one-time quick fix, you will need to keep using the solution to make sure slugs don't return after a few days.
