Which cinemas in the UK are closing? Cineworld, Picturehouse and more to shut doors from today

Cinemas across the UK are closing their doors as the film industry struggles to survive the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

While theatres across the country were forced to close earlier this year when the country entered lockdown, many cinemas had re-opened over the summer when restrictions were eased.

Other than Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi blockbuster Tenet, which was released theatrically in August, many of the year’s biggest releases, such as Disney’s live-action Mulan or the forthcoming Dune, have either converted to digital releases, or postponed their release dates until next year.

On 2 October, it was announced that the James Bond film No Time to Die, originally delayed from April, would be pushed back again to 2 April 2021.

In the days that followed, several UK cinema chains announced plans to either close temporarily, or scale back operations for the foreseeable future.

While Cineworld and Picturehouse are closing completely, rival chain Odeon is only paring down opening times in some locations.

Here is a list of all the cinemas which will be closing…

Cineworld

Cineworld is closing the doors of all 127 of its UK venues from Friday, 9 October.

There is currently no word on when the chain will re-open. Cineworld also operates 536 cinemas in the US, all of which will also be closing.

In a statement, Cineworld boss Mooky Greidinger said: “This is not a decision we made lightly, and we did everything in our power to support safe and sustainable reopenings in all of our markets - including meeting, and often exceeding, local health and safety guidelines in our theatres and working constructively with regulators and industry bodies to restore public confidence in our industry.”

Picturehouse

Because the chain is owned by Cineworld, all Picturehouse cinemas are also set to close, starting from Friday, 9 October.

While Odeon cinemas are not all closing, they are scaling back opening times, with around 25 per cent of their 120-odd screening venues closing during the week.

The chain has not released a full list of which cinemas will be affected, and how, but cinema-goers are able to check screening schedules on a cinema-by-cinema basis on their website.
