What date should you take your Christmas tree down?
Seeing as Christmas time can be the busiest time of year for all families, when you put up your tree is completely up to you. However, according to tradition, trees and decorations usually come down by the 5th of January. Twelfth night falls on a Sunday in 2025.
According to Chris Craig, co-founder of Christmas at Home UK (@christmasathomeuk) and director and second generation grower at Stagsden Christmas Trees (stagsdenchristmastrees.co.uk), the twelfth night after Christmas (5th January) traditionally represents the end of Christmas. To celebrate the ending, back in the Victorian era, families would celebrate with cake, music, and games, and then take their trees down.
So that is how the tradition to take down decorations after this date, on the 5th, was born. Even today, many people now think it’s bad luck if decorations are left up past then.
Are you supposed to take your Christmas tree down before New Year's or after?
Depending on your situation, it's up to you whether you want to take your Christmas tree down before or after New Year's. If you prefer to start the year with a fresh slate, try taking down your decorations earlier and dismantling the tree before the New Year.
Sam Lyle, founder of Pines and Needles (pinesandneedles.com), says his busiest returns day is the 6th of January. He said: “It’s always extremely busy for us, which is how we know the majority of our customers do stick to taking their tree down on the Twelfth Night.”
However, Interiors influencer Ness Hancock (@creativedesignseeds) disagrees, but is still team 6th of January. “Some are eager to take down the tree as soon as Christmas Day is over. Others wish to hang on to the festivities for longer. Nowadays, it’s personal preference.” she explains. “Although, you're not alone in putting off... the task of taking down the tree always seems far less fun.” she adds.
