From David Bowie to Doja Cat, the world’s most iconic artists have always pushed boundaries by fusing bold makeup with their music. Chappell Roan, pop’s fearless trailblazer and queen of the Grammys, is no exception, using makeup as to showcase her multifaceted identities and pay homage to revered sub cultures.

From neon green eyeshadow and gold leaf brows to clowncore facepaint, Chappell has always been open and honest about how her looks relate to her experiences of queerness growing up in a small American town. 'People in my hometown call gay people clowns,' she explained to the crowd at her Manchester gig back in September 2024. 'That’s why I actually wear my white face… Like b**ch, I’ll show you a clown.'

Inspired by drag queens and those who defy expectations, Chappell’s makeup looks are as bold and fearless as her sound. As her makeup artist Stephen Tull told Dazed in July 2024; 'Makeup isn’t just for making yourself feel more 'beautiful' – it’s for making yourself feel confident and fearless.'

And while she’s known for her daring looks, Chappell isn’t afraid to go makeup-free either. Often sharing fresh-faced moments on Instagram, she reminds us that confidence shines just as brightly without the glam. Here are all the times Chappell Roan wowed us, makeup-free and fabulous.

During Grammys week

This makeup-free selfie earned Chappell nearly 2 million likes, which she captioned with a heartfelt message about how she was feeling before the annual music awards held this month.

'Hey girls I just woke up. Good morning booboos. It’s Grammy week. I am very emo. My heart feels warm and fuzzy with all the support I have been given this past year. I hope you can understand that this has been incredible and scary and spiritual and confusing. I’ve been crying tears of joy and grief and feeling loved and lonely and free. Ultimately, I am grateful for every one of you who gave my music a little spin and showed your ass up to shows and festivals. Because yall are rockstars I feel like a rockstars :) Damn I am cheesy lowkey. Whatever anyway; I love the performance we’re preparing for you all . And girl no matter what, just know when I’m up on stage, all I’m really feeling in my heart is love to the queer community especially those in places where it is unsafe to be yourself. I see you <3 tootles xox'

When talking about body confidence

Chappell Roan was beautifully honest when posting a makeup free photo to her IG two years ago. 'Idk i feel emo right now and just wanted to share that i am very fortunate and grateful to have my dream job. This job is very difficult for me to process and maintain a healthy life & mindset. I already have difficulty regulating my emotions because I have bipolar 2 disorder. I am very hard on my body image and feel like no matter what weight or how “toned” I am, it simply isn’t enough. I’m working through it the best I can and I’m grateful I have the means to afford therapy and occasional time off.'
