Channel 5's Dalgliesh full cast as detective drama returns for third series

Popular Channel 5 drama Dalgliesh is returning for its third series. Filming took place once again in Northern Ireland and the new series will feature some big-name guest stars.

Set in mid-1970s England the series follows published poet Detective Chief Inspector Adam Dalgliesh as he solves complex crimes, as a specialist in unusual murders. The upcoming season consists of six episodes in total, divided into three adaptations of PD James' novels.

Each of the three episodes will air over two consecutive days each week, with the full episode schedule as follows: Death in Holy Orders - Thursday, December 5, and Friday, December 6. Cover Her Face will air on Thursday, December 12, and Friday, December 13, while Devices and Desires is set for Thursday, December 19, and Friday, December 20. Each episode will be broadcast at 9pm and will last an hour.

Bertie Carvel as Detective Chief Inspector Adam Dalgliesh

Bertie Carvel, known for his roles in Doctor Foster and The Sister, returns as the title character. Speaking to Radio Times, he revealed how he used the role to cope with his mother's death: "Just before we shot Dalgliesh, my mother died and I definitely derived something therapeutic from accessing that."

Alistair Brammer as DS Daniel Tarrant

Playing Dalgliesh's sidekick, DS Daniel Tarrant, is theatre star Alistair Brammer. He is best known for playing Jean Prouvaire in both the 2010 special Les Misérables: 25th Anniversary Concert and the 2012 musical film Les Misérables. From 2019 to 2022 he played Fiyero in the West End production of Wicked.

Carlyss Peer as Kate Miskin

Kate Miskin was Dalgliesh's work partner, but she was promoted from DS to DCI at the end of season two and moved to another department. She is played by Carlyss Peer who is known for her roles in County Lines and The Crown.

Phoebe Nicholls as Agatha Betteron

Known for starring in Downton Abbey, Endeavour and A Very British Scandal is Phoebe Nicholls who is playing Agatha Batteron.

Anton Lesser as John Betteron

Anton Lesser is known for starring in Game of Thrones and The Crown and is playing John Betteron.

Lloyd Owen as George Gregory

Welsh star Lloyd Owen, who has starred in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and Silent Witness, is playing George Gregory.

Charlie Cain as Raphael Arbuthnot

Charlie Cain, who has been in Fool Me Once and Stuck, is playing Raphael Arbuthnot.

Claire Goose as Dr Emma Lavenham

Formerly playing in Casualty and starring in The Bay is Claire Goose who is playing Dr Emma Lavenham.

Andrew Havill as Matthew Crampton

Earlier this year Andrew Havill starred in Mr Bates vs The Post Office and has also starred in The Crown and Vera. He is playing Matthew Crampton.

Richard Lintern as Father Sebastian

Previously starring in The Crown and Silent Witness, Richard Lintern is playing Father Sebastian.

Michael Jenn as Father Peregrine

Lloyd James as Eric Surtees

Lloyd James has starred in Trigger Point and Will and is now playing Eric Surtees.

Phoebe Sparrow as Karen Surtees

Known for starring in Downton Abbey is Phoebe Sparrow who is playing Karen Surtees.

Benjamin Cawley as Dr Mark Ayling

Previously starring in Shetland is Benjamin Cawley who is playing Dr Mark Ayling.
