Britney Spears 'divorces' husband Sam Asghari after 'agreeing settlement'
Britney Spears has reportedly divorced her husband Sam Asghari after splitting last year. The couple broke up after 14 months of marriage in July and according to reports, they are now officially divorced after reaching a settlement.
According to TMZ, the former couple settled their divorce by keeping to the terms of their prenuptial agreement. "The divorce was amicable and the prenup was not challenged," an insider spilled to PEOPLE. "Britney is continuing to flex her freedom and is moving on."
Despite rumours swirling that Britney was paying Sam's rent post-split, a source has quashed these claims. "The report that she is in financial distress is false and she is not on any lease for him," the confidant clarified to the publication. The ex-couple are just waiting for a judge's signature to officially dissolve their union, with the finalisation expected to be swift, reports the Mirror.
OK! has reached out to Britney Spears' representatives for comment.
In a heartfelt social media post shortly after the divorce proceedings began, Sam shared: "After six years of love and commitment to each other my wife and I have decided to end our journey together. We will hold onto the love and respect we have for each other and I wish her the best always," he concluded on his Instagram Story.
A source previously revealed to PEOPLE that despite the ongoing drama, Britney was "in great spirits despite everything going on", adding: "Obviously it's never an easy thing to go through, but she's remaining positive and focusing on the future." Sam cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for their split on July 28 2023.
The pair first sparked romance rumours back in 2016 after meeting on the set of Britney's music video for her hit song, Slumber Party. Sam popped the question in September 2021 and they said 'I do' on June 4 the following year in a star-studded ceremony in Los Angeles.
In a post-split interview, Sam had nothing but kind words for his ex-wife, saying: "It was a blessing to be able to share life with someone for a long time. And people grow apart and people move on."
He went on to say: "I've always hated people leaving a certain relationship - and at some point they told each other they love each other and they sat at the same table and ate food [together] - so I never understood when people part ways [and] they talk badly about each other."
Sam candidly told PEOPLE after filing for divorce last year: "That's something I'm never going to do because I had nothing but an amazing experience and a great life, and that's always going to be part of my life, a chapter of my life."
