Are boxing boots the latest footwear trend that packs a punch?
It's undeniable that sport's influence on fashion is far from over. From styling track pants with heels and coats for the office to the summer staple of running sunglasses, the latest athletic trend seems to be taking us to the ring.
Boxing boots are the controversial trainer trend that has made its way onto runways and the feet of the style set this season. These shoes, a blend between trainers and boots, bring a sportier edge to classic winter footwear, keeping your feet comfortable and warm while adding a bold touch to any outfit. But does this trend truly have staying power?
Global sportswear brand Adidas is once again leading the charge in unconventional footwear. Their viral, cult-favourite, football-inspired Samba trainer made a splash in the fashion world, seen on everyone from Kate Moss to Kendall Jenner—even former PM Rishi Sunak joined the trend, and quickly killed it... Since then, Adidas has revived vintage sport-inspired styles like the SL72, which debuted at the 1972 Olympics, and the polarising Taekwondo silhouette.
Now this isn't a new shoe for the brand, adidas launched their infamous Box Hog shoe back in the 2000s but it's certainly taking a step outside of the gym and crossing over into the world of fashion, their Japan VH are another hot contender. Most recently, brand ambassador and K-pop star Jennie Kim sported a pair during an on-stage interview with Billie Eilish, and the style sold out almost immediately.
In the world of luxury, multiple brands brought boxing boot-inspired silhouettes to the runway. Most notably, iconic UK label Stella McCartney paired her own rendition of the style with thigh-skimming mini skirts and oversized faux leather shorts. While Dior's Olympic-inspired runway saw models in metallic, sheer knee-high boxing-esque boot/trainer hybrids.
How to style boxing boots
But how can this trend actually be brought into the real world? Well if you love your trainers and want to pack a punch in your winter wardrobe this year there are plenty of ways to style it that make them feel super natural and versatile.
Move away from the sporty aesthetic the shoes give off and instead style the shoes with something feminine and delicate in contrast. Flowing skirts and fabrics like lace and chiffon make for a sweet look, or a mini skirt and blazer make for a unique but very chic ensemble.
Consider styling them as you would your usual combat boots, but with added foot comfort and a vintage flair. Their hugely versatile so if this style resonates with you you can easily take them into spring and summer next year too.
