The recent break-in at the Windsor Castle estate proved that no matter how strong the ring of security is around the royal family, such incidents can and do happen. Masked thieves scaled a fence during the night to steal farm vehicles, making off with a pick up truck and a quad bike from a barn at Shaw Farm, inside the grounds. While the King and Queen were not in residence at the castle at the time, it is believed that the Prince and Princess of Wales and their children were at home at nearby Adelaide Cottage on the estate.

However, former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond, speaking exclusively to OK!, believes that there was no great cause for alarm for Prince William and his family. “This was a farm break-in, not an attempt to get into a royal home,” she said.

“Farm break-ins are rife at the moment – and particularly in the Home Counties. So, although it’s obviously not pleasant to think people are trying to steal possessions from close by – and I imagine quite a few questions are being asked about how the robbers got onto the Windsor estate – I didn’t think anyone will be unduly alarmed.”

The Prince and Princess of Wales’s main worry would be over leaked details of the crime that could encourage others to try the same thing, Jennie believes, as this is certainly not the first time that a royal estate has been broken into.

“Over the years, there have been so many incidents far more serious than this: Michael Fagan in the Queen‘s bedroom, an attempted kidnap of Princess Anne, numerous incidents of people scaling the walls of the Palace or Windsor Castle,” Jennie explains. “So it just goes with the territory and I think William and Catherine are perfectly aware of that.”

“They probably would have preferred this incident to remain private as there are always copycats around who get daft ideas when they see that something like this has happened.”

William’s brother, Prince Harry, has, of course, been critical of personal security measures available to his family in the UK, but Jennie doesn’t think that he would use the current incident to enforce his argument that he needs more protection, as he would already be “perfectly aware” that break-ins like this can happen.

“I don’t think Harry would think this was any particular vindication of his stand: he must be perfectly aware how often things like this happen, even when the people in question have 24 hour security,” she says.
