Bluetooth Tampon Aims To Get Rid Of Period Anxiety

It’s something every woman has experienced while Aunt Flo’s on a visit. That horror-filled realisation that you’ve had some, ahem, leakage. But a new start-up has come up with a solution which aims to make unfortunate stains a thing of the past.
my.Flow has created the smart tampon, which connects to an app via Bluetooth and notifies the wearer when their tampon needs to be changed.
It works via a super long tampon string, which snakes out of your underwear and attaches to a snap-on bluetooth sensor. This bluetooth sensor can then be clipped on to your waistband and sends data to an app on your phone, analysing how saturated the tampon has become and letting you know when it needs to be swapped.
You can even set the app to notify you once your tampon is a certain percentage full, you know in case you’re wearing white jeans or something.

And saving face is not the only benefit. Creators hope that over time the app will use the data it tracks to predict when the user’s period will start, how long it will last, and which days will be the heaviest. More seriously it aims to help prevent Toxic Shock Syndrome.
“Women need this, because we can’t check how full our tampons are, so we err on the side of taking them out prematurely — which is not only wasteful, but also quite physically uncomfortable,” co-founder and CEO Amanda Brief told Refinery29.

She hopes the invention will not only eradicate period anxiety but also help women feel more in tune with their bodies, in a similar way that fitness trackers and heart monitors work.
“Some women know their flow well, which is awesome. Our product is for those that do not, or would like to learn and track more.”
The company is currently seeking funding and if all the smart new sensors will be available to buy for a one-off payment of $49 (£34).
