Whether it's in your in-box, in stores or on your social media feeds, you can't have missed Black Friday kicking off in earnest this week. With huge sales and discounts worth exploring, now is a great time to start your Christmas shopping or invest in that big-ticket item you've had your eye on.

But what exactly is Black Friday, and when do the sales actually end? We've got all the details you need to know.

What is Black Friday?

Black Friday is an annual sales event when many retailers drop their prices, discounting everything from kitchen essentials to beauty products. It starts on the Friday after Thanksgiving in the US, which is the busiest shopping day of the year across the pond. with discounts often rolling throughout the weekend and across Cyber Monday.

Some stores may open early and close late, and in the past people have even camped overnight to get the best deals on their desired products. Thankfully, you can shop from the comfort of your sofa and nab excellent savings online.

When is Black Friday 2024?

This year, Black Friday falls on Friday 29 November, with Cyber Monday on 2 December.

But with the sales event getting bigger every year, lots of brands have already launched their Black Friday sales, so you can get in on the action early.

When do Black Friday 2024 sales end?

Black Friday sales usually run throughout the weekend and most will finish at midnight (or 11:59 to be precise) on Monday 2 December (aka Cyber Monday). That gives you four days to snap up your favourite savings.

Some brands will even offer freebies for spending over a certain amount over the weekend weekend, so it's worth checking out what's on offer to bag a stocking filler or gift for yourself this Christmas.

And while most deals wrap up at midnight on Monday, others will roll over into what's sometimes called Cyber Week, lasting well into the first week of December. So, do your research if you're interested in a particular retailer.

How we find the best Black Friday deals

In the build up to the Black Friday weekend, we've been scouring all your (and our) favourite brands for the best deals each day, including everything from best-selling air fryers to top-rated vacuums — all either with the Good Housekeeping Institute seal of approval, or personal recommendations from Good Housekeeping's expert shopping editors.

It can be an overwhelming sale with so much on offer, so it's a good idea to create a wish list (and try to stick to it!) to avoid overspending — especially if you're gifting. For more tips on shopping the sale like a pro, head to our complete guide.

Are Black Friday deals genuinely good value?

If you're not convinced the saving is as good as it looks, it's worth doing some research. If you're looking to buy something on Amazon, for example, head to camelcamelcamel.com, which will show you the product's entire price history on the site. Comparison sites like PriceSpy will show you the cheapest website you can buy a product from and Google Shopping compares prices across a range of retailers.

But, if you don't have time to do the research, don't worry. We're constantly tracking deals across sale periods, including Prime Days and the January sales, so we know a good saving when we see one and we'll only flag the genuine bargains.

Just because a product is heavily discounted, that doesn't necessarily make it good value, though. For that reason, across our Black Friday 2024 coverage, we focus our selection on Good Housekeeping Institute Approved products, which have been rigorously tested in the lab and, where relevant, with our at-home panel, along with our editors' personal picks.
