Black Doves: Everything we know about S2
What we can expect from the next instalment of our Netflix obsession?
There are a few clear indications that a TV show is a success. One is if the show is recommissioned – no longer a given in the cut-throat world of television – and another is if the awards nominations roll in. By this metric, Netflix’s Black Doves is a monster hit.
Created by Joe Barton (Giri/Haji and The Lazarus Project) and set in the high-octane world of spies and assassins, the deeply compelling Black Doves has thankfully been green-lit for a second series – news that broke at the Edinburgh TV festival in August, three whole months before the show streamed on Netflix.
On the awards front, Keira Knightley is already cleaning up thanks to being cast in the role of Helen Webb, the UK Defence Secretary’s wife who is secretly a spy and covertly selling government secrets to a shadowy organisation known as the Black Doves. To date, Keira has been nominated for a Critics Choice Award in the Best TV actress category – less than 24 hours after the series launched – and a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Drama Series. But watch this space because there will likely be more.
And if all that wasn’t enough of an accolade, the show – also starring Ben Whishaw and Sarah Lancashire – has been endorsed by both Liam Gallagher and Prince William himself, who revealed that he and Catherine have been watching at home.
With series two at the forefront of our minds, here’s what we know so far. Warning: spoilers ahead!
What will happen in Black Doves S2?
Creator Joe Barton revealed he likes the idea of seeing Helen “pulled deeper into the world of spies having been so close to leaving.” With husband Wallace (Andrew Buchan) seemingly on course for the top job of Prime Minister, this inevitably “increases the pressure and the danger on her as a spy.” Residing at Number 10 would certainly bring an added level of scrutiny to Helen, but also larger scope for secret drawers and cubby holes to stash her arsenal of weapons – so that’s exciting.
In addition to seeing the stakes being raised for Helen, Joe also plans for fan favourites, Eleanor (Gabrielle Creevy) and Williams (Ella Lily Hyland) – the assassin double act – and Ambassador Chen’s daughter Kai-Ming (Isabella Wei) to return. He enjoyed seeing all three, a “found family”, having a laugh and spending Christmas together at the end of series one. “You could definitely see them forming a little group,” he says. “Kai-Ming would have to stop being a heroin addict party girl, probably. Maybe they could start their own little assassin agency working out of their canal boat. I’d like to see that.”
What did the Black Doves S1 finale reveal?
With series 2 being written, we know it will be a while before we can feast our eyes on the next instalment. So, for now, we’re going to make like Helen Webb and hunt down some clues from the series 1 finale.
For starters, with triggerman Sam (Whishaw) killing notorious criminal Alex Clark (Tracey Ullman) and her son Trent (Angus Cooper) in order to protect Helen, he now has a huge target on his back. This means he definitely can’t get back together with Michael (Omari Douglas) or he will endanger both him and his daughter, Ruby. Sob!
Instead, Sam receives a job offer from Hector Newman (Luther Ford) – the young boy that Sam refused to kill back in the day, who is all grown up now and a hardened gangster in his own right. While this would hopefully reduce Sam’s chances of a reprisal from the Clarks, it would also mean he’s further embedded in the dark underbelly of the criminal underworld.
In one of the final scenes, we saw Mrs Reed (Lancashire) relaxing in her penthouse apartment sharing a festive tipple with none other than Marnie (Molly Chesworth), Helen and Wallace’s nanny! Not only is it yet another example of Mrs Reed’s willingness to betray Helen’s trust, but it also means we’ll be on high alert next series to see who the potential traitors might be in Helen’s inner circle.
As for Helen, herself, having discovered that her lover Jason (Andrew Koji) was a MI5 operative investigating her, it’s safe to say Helen will have trust issues. But to be fair, in Black Doves, is there really anyone you can trust?
When is S2 of Black Doves on?
Your guess is as good as ours, but we are confident it won’t be for a long while yet. So, we’re just going to have to make do with re-watching all six episodes of series one, taking forensic notes and sharpening our powers of deduction ready for series two to land.
Black Doves is streaming on Netflix now.
