Fleabag is all we can think about. And now, according to Marks And Spencer, we’re not just talking about it, we’re sparking new drinks trends because of it.
Between its head-on approach to sex, the hilariously witty writing of Phoebe Waller-Bridge and the sexy priest (need we say more?) it’s no wonder this BBC comedy is influencing us in ways we didn’t even realise. Namely, our pre-mixed gin & tonic can purchasing habits.
Marks And Spencer reported that sales were up 24% since the episode aired on 11 March. An M&S spokesman said: “This isn’t just G&T in a can, it’s M&S G&T in a can. An absolute favourite with M&S customers, as well as the occasional vicar as seen recently on the hit show Fleabag.”
We first came across the drink in episode 2 of the new series 2.
“Do you want to try a proper drink?” Andrew Scott’s priest asked Fleabag. “I’ve got cans of G&T from M&S.”
The priest was hanging out with Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s character after a sermon when he whipped out the cans.
The ‘Fleabag effect’ is one that social media users had already predicted. One fan of the show tweeted, “Sales of cans of gin and tonic are going to go through the roof. #Fleabag.”
Another said “Oh my god, Phoebe Waller-Bridge is a genius. And such good casting. I want to watch it again right now. But this time with a gin and tonic.”
We can’t decide if it was the Fleabag-effect, the husky voice of the sexy priest or a combination of the two, but can’t stop thinking about a nice cold can of M&S G&T.
