BBC The Traitors fans dub contestants ‘selfish’ after challenge leaves star 'fuming'

Fans of The Traitors have been left gobsmacked after the latest episode of the gameshow featured a brutal mission.

The BBC hit show returned for its third instalment this week, with a group of new contestants set to compete for a huge prize pot of up to £120,000.

With Claudia Winkleman reclaiming her post as the host, viewers have already been captivated by unexpected twists in the new season.

However, Friday (January 3) night's episode has left them questioning the team's ability to work together with many branding the competitors "selfish."

During the latest episode, Claudia introduced a mission in which they had one hour to row a boat across a loch and collect fuel for a ring of fire on the end other. The fuel would be used to light the ring and all contestants standing inside it would be protected from murder.

Alongside immunity, the group could collect up to £10,000 for their final prize pot. As they took on the mission, the 22 stars were faced with an sudden twist.

In order to collect the fuel or bank the money, they had to sacrifice two members of the group along the way, essentially making them vulnerable for murder. While Jake and Charlotte volunteered to be sacrificed at the first pontoon, the rest of the castmates opted to stay in the boat when they came across potential prize money, forfeiting thousands of pounds.

Ultimately the group only banked £5,000 increasing their prize pot to £18,000. Upon watching the rest of the group stay inside the boat, Jake expressed that he was "fuming" and later confronted his castmates. He was not alone in his anger, as fans of the show quickly took to social media to share their frustration.

Writing on X, formerly Twitter one person joked: "The contestants' aversion to actually boosting the prize is so great that this series of Traitors is going to end with the winner owing money to the BBC."

Another person said: "Wow, they're a selfish bunch with this challenge - no teamwork & they'll have no money" while a third person chimed in: "Immunity is one thing but there'll be nothing to win at the end, if they're not going to also focus on the prize fund!"

A fourth disappointed viewer quipped: "What's the point [of] winning a shield and the prize pot is less than 20K."

This season's competitors have fuelled the game of betrayal by keeping their real identities a secret from the other castmates. One of these is 32-year-old Londoner Charlotte, who has been faking a Welsh accent because she believes it will help her appear more trustworthy.

Meanwhile Leanne, a 28-year-old veteran, has entered the castle pretending to be a nail technician in order to dodge early banishment.

Ousted contestant Keith, 65, also revealed in his exit interview that he kept his taekwondo experience under-wraps while in the show "just in case."
