“Now women, I just want you to know; you are not perfect, but what I can say pretty indisputably is that you're better than us (men).” Former president, Barack Obama, said at an expo late last week.

He went on to say he was “absolutely confident” that if every nation was run by women for two years, there would be significant improvement across the board.

220 female MPs were elected in last week’s general election - a record for the UK.

These points encouraged Good Morning Britain to debate the topic, with comedian Shazia Mirza saying: “Women think things through. They make a plan and execute” as opposed to men who go for a more “gung-ho” approach.

The debate on Twitter quickly turned to women’s hormones, with one woman saying: “Gonna get hate for this, but when I’m hormonal, I would declare war on anyone who looked at me incorrectly! I can’t be trusted with the tv control, let alone leading the country.”

Another said: “I have worked in many schools, consisting mainly of women and women headteachers, and world war 3 has started many times over someone using the wrong tea cup! Scary if they had real access to nukes!!!”

But Barack Obama felt sure that “living standards and outcomes” would improve if women were at the helm.

“If you look at the world and look at the problems it's usually old people, usually old men, not getting out of the way.” He added.

Most people agreed that a balanced approach would suit countries best, which allows the qualities of both men and women to shine.

“I think for balance there should be a male and female joint leader.....it could just work.” One of the more evened views read.

Others agreed: “I think there should be a man and a woman (equally) in charge of the country! If u get a good partnership then others will benefit from it. Two heads are better than one!!!”

The majority of people believed that gender didn’t play a significant part in a person’s ability to lead, but instead their overall personality, taking a person’s heart, mind and soul into consideration.

“I have seen men lead well and men lead badly. I have seen women lead well and women lead badly.” One person pointed out.

The pitting of men against women in these types of debate is nothing new. Just recently, a piece of research was heavily criticised by comedians for claiming that men were funnier than women.

This type of debate does bring to the forefront that an overwhelming majority of people who commented on Twitter are looking for equality in leadership - which is something we could all (surely) agree with.
