Babygirl‘s Nicole Kidman has reflected on her third time playing a supportive parent of an LGBTQ child, after Boy Erased and The Prom.

Speaking in a new interview with Attitude, the acting icon said she makes her artistic choices “knowing what I’m doing.”

She is literally mother!

In the film, the Oscar-winner plays Romy, a CEO who has an affair with her much younger intern. The film contrasts Romy’s exploration of her sexuality with the more casual and drama-free journey of her teenage daughter, who is queer, played by Esther Rose McGregor.

“I made Boy, Erased for that reason” – Nicole Kidman

“I make my artistic choices knowing what I’m doing” the star told us of the part, adding she “hopes” such roles set a positive example.

She furthermore added: “I love to be a bridge. Boy, Erased was very much – I made that for that reason. So, there was a bridge for families that were not in a place of love for each other.”

Further discussing the contrast between the mother and daughter characters in Babygirl, Nicole said it’s about “the collision of generations. What they’re teaching each other. … I loved that.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Nicole touched on a busy period for her filmography, with A Family Affair, The Perfect Couple, Expats, Lioness, and now Babygirl having all come out in the last year.

“Everything’s come out at once, even though everything was filmed over the course of three years!” she said. “When they said: ‘This’ll be coming out, this’ll be coming out, this’ll be coming out’ I was like…. OK!”

In the full interview, Nicole tells us how she juggles work and life, saying she always finds the time to “nourish” with her family.

Babygirl hits UK cinemas on Friday 10 January 2025.
