My newborn baby's hair was so thick, it was like a wig
Watch: Meet the baby with astonishingly thick hair that has people convinced it's a wig
When baby Liyana Svenningsen, now seven months old, was born at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley, Scotland, last August, she caused quite a stir on the ward.
Her mum Hadjer Harizi, 25, says midwives were amazed to see her newborn already had a full head of hair – in fact, so thick, it was more like the kind of barnet seen on a toddler than a newborn baby.
"The midwives at the hospital would come to my room and say, 'We're here to see the baby born with full head of hair,'" laughs Hadjer. "They were quite shocked to see her hair."
According to Babycentre.co.uk, many babies born with a thick crop of hair then lose it a few weeks later, but not Liyana. Now seven months old, her locks are still so full, strangers often make comments.
"People always stop us in the street or at the shops to ask about her hair," says Hadjer, a stay-at-home mum, from Glasgow. "Someone once asked if it was a wig and when I jokingly said yes, they fully believed me!"
When Liyana was a month old, Hadjer recalls strangers asking how old she was, then being amazed to find out she was only four weeks. "They be like, 'Omigod, my baby is one year old and she's still bald!"
Hadjer wasn’t totally shocked when Liyana entered the world with a bigger-than-average crop of hair, since she herself was also born with plenty of hair and still has a gloriously thick waist-length mane.
"I wasn’t really surprised because both my husband and I had a lot of hair when we were born too," she says.
Liyana's hair grew so fast that by the time she was four months old, Hadjer had to start using clips to keep it out of her face. By seven months, she had more than enough hair for a ponytail.
Now, her thick locks have become her signature look, and Hadjer enjoys taking special care of it.
"I wash her hair every three days because it becomes greasy and there's so much of it, it's hard to keep it clean when she eats," says Hadjer. "And we never let her hair air-dry. She actually loves using the Dyson hairdryer! I love styling her hair every day and I'm not going to cut it until she decides to when she's older."
