Anita Rani says Strictly Come Dancing will be "a very different show" without studio audience
Anita Rani is the latest celebrity to comment on the proposed changes to Strictly Come Dancing in light of social distancing rules.
Previously, the BBC's Director of Content Charlotte Moore has said the show would need to "change" if it were to air as planned in autumn 2020, and discussed the possibility of eliminating studio audiences in order to cut down the number of people in proximity with cast and crew.
"[People think] if it is shiny floor, it needs an audience, and I don't think that's necessarily true," she said.
"When you look at something like Drag Race, which is a big shiny floor talent competition with all sorts of catwalks, singing, dancing, impressions – it never has an audience.
"The audience is the four judges and I don't think it suffers from that at all. I think it is a brilliant show!"
Since then, celebrities connected with Strictly have commented on what that big change would mean for the show.
Former pro dancer Camilla Dallerup has said it's "hard to imagine" the programme without a live audience, adding that element is "part of the magic."
Now former contestant Anita Rani, who reached the Strictly semi-final in 2015, has spoken about the proposed change.
“Strictly is an amazing entertainment format but I think it’ll be a very different show without a studio audience," she told Radio Times.
“The energy and the buzz you get when that empty studio is filled with an audience, and those standing ovations.
“It will still be amazing, but probably a little less terrifying for whoever’s competing... The idea of being able to do it to an empty room, wow. Wow, wow, wow," she said.
For now, it's unclear what's going to happen with Strictly Come Dancing this year. Watch this space for more news.
