Some Hollywood stars are spotted on the regular, like Katie Holmes and Sarah Jessica Parker. Others are more discrete, making head-turning appearances every so often. Angelina Jolie fits into the later category—especially when it comes to street style.

Jolie was spotted leaving Atelier Jolie, her self-created safe haven for visionary people to collaborate with expert tailors, artisans, and pattern makers. Even though it was a brisk 30 degrees in NYC (I would know, since I live here), she wore wide-leg pants, open-toe platforms, and what appeared to be a cropped top. Though she defied winter odds in nearly all fashion departments, she did throw on a cozy cardigan to finish the look.

The top layer boasted a button closure, v-neckline, and ribbed hemlines. It delicately hung on her body thanks to the oversized silhouette, while a smooth material kept things sleek. The gray color was super versatile, too, effortlessly pairing with her neutral-toned ensemble. But TBH, it would go with a cranberry-red long-sleeve top and vibrant denim just as well.

But the Maleficent actress isn’t the only star who approves of snuggly cardigans. Martha Stewart is a major fan of the trend, relying on the knitted top layer like there’s no tomorrow. Don’t believe me? Just take a peek at her yellow bubble-sleeve version, gala-approved get up, or countless other cardigan-adorned ‘fits.

I get it, since a cardigan is perfect for layering during the cold months. Wear this Everlane cocoon separate over a turtleneck top, or slip this Cozy Earth sweater over a winter-appropriate dress. If it gets too stuffy, simply slide it off.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t tell you how perfect cardigans are for lounging, too. My favorite way to wear the toasty style is over a sports bra with fleece-lined sweats while streaming Hallmark holiday films. It’s like a blanket you can wear and a robe that’s actually acceptable to step outside in.
