Why you should always have porridge for breakfast

In recent years, the truth behind the nation’s favourite cereals has been unveiled. With Coco Pops and Cookie Crisp holding alarming levels of sugar in their tempting boxes.

So it comes as no surprise that many of us are turning to porridge as a healthier alternative, especially as the winter months creep in. But the health benefits to the oat-based breakfast are even greater than we first thought.

According to Chris Seal, professor of food and human nutrition at Newcastle University, porridge can help to boost immunity, reduce cholesterol and even prevent cancer.

He told the Mail Online: “I believe that if everyone started the day with porridge, it would have a significant impact on public health.”

According to the professor, porridge contains a soluble fibre known as beta glucan which forms a thick substance in the gut once digested. This not only makes us feel fuller faster but helps to balance the immune system which in turn, lowers cholesterol and fights cancer.

The fibre is also famed for helping to reduce the risk of obesity, as it is renowned for speeding up metabolism.

And there is further evidence to back up the extraordinary claims. A 14-year study conducted by Harvard University examined the health of 100,000 people and found that those who ate the most whole grains (note, porridge) were protected from illnesses such as heart disease.

So next time you’re peckish on the way to work, skip the temptation of Pret’s pastries and make a hearty bowl of oats. Your health will thank you for it.
