Alexa Chung's vintage bag just proved why you should never throw anything away
Alexa Chung just showcased a vintage bag that perhaps epitomises her signature sartorial agenda perfectly. If she was a designer bag, she’d be the exact modified vintage Mulberry Roxanne she showed her six million Instagram followers, with the additional shoulder strap that only she could perfectly execute.
From wearing a naked dress to meet King Charles, to channelling TikTok’s beloved Coastal Grandmother trend at a VIP dinner, the model and style muse always serves the perfect amount of eclecticism alongside her signature chic, and that agenda has clearly remained unchanged for 17 years as demonstrated by her bag that she said was from “circa 2006”.

She posted the image of her oak-coloured leather Roxanne to her Instagram stories, with the caption “Thur she blows. Just found my ancient bag avec actual guitar strap circa 2006”. Yep, that’s right. Alexa Chung upped the ante on noughties grunge by adding a blue guitar with a white and red embroidered pattern – an ode to her quintessential Britishness?
What is the Mulberry Roxanne bag?
The iconic Roxanne was first released by Mulberry in 2004 and the fashion set including Victoria Beckham and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley were quick to make it the must-have accessory in the mid 2000s. It’s slight slouchiness and chunky buckles epitomised the boho-chic Sienna Miller-esque style we all pined after at the time.

In 2021 Mulberry released mini versions of their signature bags to celebrate 50 years of the British label including the Roxanne, the Alexa and of course, the Bayswater.
In the same series of Instagram stories, Chung proved the breadth of her style agenda and wore the shoe that Vogue dubbed 2023’s ‘ugliest’ shoe of the year. Jonathan Anderson debuted the frog-shaped mules in JW Anderson’s AW23 show during February’s fashion month. Again, only Alexa Chung could make ‘guitar-strapped Mulberry’ and ‘frog shaped mule’ make sense in the same sentence…
The quirky-cool gift that keeps on giving.
