Airstream refurbs: inside 14 amazing vintage trailers
Tiny living doesn't get much better than this
These days, Airstreams don't mean slumming it on a barren strip of land. They're now the first choice of glampers and Instagram influencers – think stylish, cosy and comfortable.
Read on to discover the story behind the brand and take a look at the best Airstream refurbs and designs to inspire you to take the road in your own tiny home on wheels.
The first Airstream
Airstreams have been a favourite home-on-the-road for vacationers for almost a century. Back in 1929, Wally Byam built the first Airstream trailer. It was a teardrop-shaped canvas and Masonite shelter attached to a Ford Model T chassis – mainly for his wife Marion, who was fed up camping in draughty tents.
A year later, Byam published a DIY guide to building a trailer, which was followed by floods of requests to construct RVs. To cope with the demand, Byam rented a factory in Culver City, California, officially founding his trailer manufacturing company in 1931.
Finding a name
The fledgling firm completed its first factory-produced model, the Torpedo (pictured), in 1932 and launched two larger models soon after, the Silver Cloud and the Airlite.
A couple of years later, Wally Byam adopted the name Airstream, a perfect moniker for the company's teardrop-shaped trailers, which cruised down the road "like a stream of air".
First aluminium Airstream
During the early 1930s, William Hawley Bowlus, an engineer who had worked on Charles Lindbergh's famous Spirit of St Louis aeroplane, created the Road Chief, an aerodynamic Streamline Moderne-style trailer in gleaming aluminium. But Bowlus' aircraft-inspired RVs failed to sell.
In 1936, Byam stepped in, buying up Bowlus' inventory. Byam reconfigured the Road Chief, creating the iconic Airstream Clipper, pictured here, and put his marketing and advertising skills to good use.
A pricey investment
Sales of the Clipper went through the roof, despite the trailer's hefty $1,200 price tag – a lot of money in Depression-era America, the equivalent of around $27,252 (£21.6k) today.
While this Airbnb showcases a well-preserved 1950s interior, its predecessor, the 1936 model, was similarly designed to be cosy and comfortable, with leather seating, solid cabinetry and a cocoon-like ceiling.
Refined design
Production ceased during the Second World War, so Byam closed his business and focused on making aeroplanes instead of trailers, teaming up with aeronautical firms Lockhead and Curtis Wright.
Once the war had ended, Byam re-established Airstream. Applying the aeroplane design skills he learned during wartime, Byam created the Curtis Wright Clipper in 1948. The upgraded Clipper was an overnight success, selling in the thousands. In 1950, Byam created the Flying Cloud, which is still produced today.
Buoyant sales
The firm outgrew its Californian HQ by the 1950s and in 1952, Byam opened a larger factory in Ohio.
With sales buoyant throughout the decade, Byam further refined his RV lineup and launched the Airstream International, "the world's first self-contained trailer", in 1958.
A proud legacy
Byam died in 1962, leaving behind a super-successful trailer company that had become known worldwide.
America's most luxurious trailers, Airstream RVs of the time featured the latest modern conveniences, from air conditioning to refrigerators.
The silver bullet design
The Airstream trailer was redesigned in 1969 with smoother edges that resemble a silver bullet.
Such was its renown, that same year the company was chosen to design and build a mobile quarantine pod for the returning Apollo 11 astronauts.
Cool customisation
As interest in tiny home living continues to grow, the brand has started to attract a younger, cooler clientele. This army of loyal fans – who like to call themselves Airstreamers – share a passion both for the timeless, classic Airstream design and for customising and renovating their vehicles.
Let's take a look at some of the most amazing Airstream renovations to inspire your next project...
1960s vintage Airstream
A gleaming example of a 1969 Airstream, this vintage trailer in California has been painstakingly revived and restored to its former glory. Its owners lifted the tiny home into their backyard with a 100-foot (30m) crane. They spent a year gutting the aluminium shell and rebuilding the interior as a faithful homage to its 1960s heyday.
Now used as a guest house and rented out on Airbnb, the trailer features modern creature comforts beneath its heritage façade, from Wi-Fi and cable TV to state-of-the-art amenities.

Inside, the Airstream is steeped in nostalgia. The sensitively designed interior channels the charm of a bygone era, with its carefully selected mid-century modern furnishings and fixtures.
The open-plan living room includes an electric fire, sofa bed, compact dining table and kitchenette, fitted with retro red appliances. At the rear of the trailer, there's a magnificent bathroom with a walk-in shower, which is clad in vintage maps, while a queen-sized bedroom sits at the far end.
Tropical Airstream retreat
Retired from the open road, this beautiful 1967 Airstream Overlander has been given a new lease of life as a rental home for holidaymakers visiting the coast of Guanacaste in northwestern Costa Rica.
The trailer is moments away from the ocean and features all the vestiges of a laidback surfer's retreat, including a hammock strung on its timber deck.

The living space exemplifies smart, space-saving design. A double bed is tucked beneath the window near the front door, featuring built-in storage in its base. Next to it, the snug kitchenette squeezes in a full-sized oven, hob and fridge. A clever, slatted wall divider helps to zone the floor plan, carving out space for an office desk.
Meanwhile, built into the back of the trailer there's a washroom with a large shower lined in minimalist white mosaic tiles, which follows the curvature of the Airstream's shell.
Bright maximalist Airstream
While some Airstream renovations evoke eras past, others are bold and innovative. This Airstream holiday park, perched on a rooftop amid the busy skyline of Cape Town in South Africa, firmly falls into the latter category.
Each of the seven Airbnb trailers is imbued with a distinctive personality. For example, this bold sleeping space features a dramatic botanical mural complete with a zebra, monkey and super-sized bird of prey.

In another unit, a slick of black paint creates a cocoon around the sleeping zone at the rear, while graphic, black and white wallpaper envelops a snug seating area. Clever built-in storage helps to maximise the limited space.
Each Airstream has its own bathroom with a shower, mini fridge, wardrobe and Wi-Fi. The units have access to the rooftop garden too, with breathtaking views across Cape Town.
Tom Hanks' custom Airstream
These snazzy homes on wheels are popular purchases for celebrities as well as civilians. Just take a look at Tom Hanks’ bespoke Airstream trailer, which he bought back in 1992.
Tired of living in uncomfortable trailers with ugly furniture during longer movie shoots, Hanks acquired this 35-foot-long (11m) home-away-from-home and had it outfitted to his specifications.

Though far from glamorous when compared to some of the other renovated models, the Airstream did include a cosy fake fireplace and a dressing room-style illuminated mirror.
The trailer served Tom well for nearly two decades, and when he did finally part with it in 2021, he managed to sell it for a whopping $235,200 (£186k).
