'I'm 25 years younger than my husband - people think I'm his daughter'

A woman in a relationship with a 25-year age gap has revealed that she is often mistaken for her husband’s daughter rather than his wife.

Kayy Mackenzie, 30, first met husband Davey Mackenzie, a decorator, 54, in 2019 at a pub, and says they clicked instantly.

They got engaged just two weeks after dating, and married in December 2021.

“When we first met, he said he noticed me as soon as I walked in the door and thought: ‘That's the woman I'm going to marry’,” Mackenzie explains.

"We got talking later when I noticed him on the dance floor, he was so nice, and seemed really cool and younger than he is.”

After they started chatting that first night, they discovered they had similar ‘down to earth’ attitudes and shared a pint of beer and a dance together.

"I was surprised at first when he said he was nearly 50 but I didn't give a toss at all,” Mackenzie explains.

"I've never considered age at all in relationships, I've always wanted a guy who is older than me so they can look after me.

"Funnily enough he thought I was older than I am and I thought he was younger! But age doesn't matter to us, it's just a number."

Two weeks after meeting, they had moved in together.

"Restaurant staff see us together and comment on how nice it is to see a dad and daughter out for dinner,” Mackenzie, a musical theatre performer, from Epsom, Surrey, says.

"They always look so embarrassed when I tell them we're married."

Mackenzie says her now husband proposed while they were on a day trip to London together – and, while it was quick, she was thrilled to say ‘yes’.

"I knew he was my soulmate so I didn't see the point in waiting,” she adds. "His family took a while to come around to the idea of the relationship because of the age gap.

"But there are no issues now – when we see each other we all get on."

Davey has three children from previous relationships, who are all now aged in their 20s.

"He brings a lot of wisdom from a lot of life experience and I teach him modern things like how to use his phone properly,” Mackenzie says.

"He's made me more grounded as a person. When I'm upset, instead of just going silent or getting annoyed he's taught me to talk it out with him."

The couple have plans to move "somewhere coastal, by the beach" soon, and are planning on having children in the future.

She says she thought Davey was younger than he was when they first met, and he thought she was older, but the age gap didn't matter.

Davey adds: "I was first drawn to Kayy when I saw her walk into the room, she looked so beautiful and loving. Something about her just made me go 'wow, she's the one'.

"We don't notice the age gap. Love is love, not numbers. We have a very similar attitude really, she's mature. I was slightly embarrassed at first to be mistaken as a father sometimes, but I don't care too much now, I find it quite amusing.”
