Adam Devine Recalls Weight Gain During Wife Chloe Bridges' Pregnancy: 'I Won't Say It's a Competition, but I Won' (Exclusive)
The actor and comedian says he put on "sympathy weight" before the couple welcomed their first baby, son Beau, in February 2024
Adam Devine is getting candid about the weight he gained amid his wife Chloe Bridges' pregnancy.
In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, the actor and comedian, 41, says he gained "sympathy weight" while Bridges, 33, was expecting their first baby, son Beau, who was later born in February 2024.
"It was a real thing for me," Devine says of the idea, which is also known as Couvade syndrome. "I just ballooned up, and I felt like I didn't look like myself. I'd look in the mirror, and it was like I was a cartoon version of myself."
"Chloe, she was eating for two and building a human child. I wasn't building a human child, but it looked like I was," he continues. "I gained more weight than she did — I gained 28 pounds, I think she gained, like, 26 pounds."
"I won't say it's a competition, but technically if it was, I won. And she had a whole human growing in her. Mine was just fat and obesity," adds the Righteous Gemstones star.

According to Devine, seeing how much weight he put on during Chloe's pregnancy affected how he looked at himself. "I just wanted to get back to feeling like me again," he says.
So, looking around for options to lose weight, Devine decided to use MyFitnessPal — an all-in-one food tracker and health app.

"I just started to track everything, and it made it so easy to actually get the weight off," Devine explains.
"I usually eat pretty healthy, or at least I think I'm eating healthy, but I was just eating too much of it," continues the Modern Family alum. "So it helps with having the knowledge of what you're putting in your body."
Devine has since shed weight that he put on and says his efforts have been noticed by many in his life, including his primary care physician.
"I was at my annual physical and he was like, 'Wow, you're no longer obese.' And I'm like, 'Whoa. You're throwing that word around,' and he's like, 'You were,' and I'm like, 'You don't have to double down on it. I was hefty, for sure,' " Devine says with a laugh. "But it was nice to get back to feeling like myself, honestly."
"I've always eaten well and I've always worked out, but it was just the amount I was eating and not knowing that certain things were bad for me," adds the Pitch Perfect star.
Devine says he is now happy with his weight-loss results and he wants to make sure they stick.
"I feel like this year I'm in such a good rhythm with this, I just want to stay on it," he says.
