Abbey House Museum to remain open after Leeds rallying cry
A Leeds museum under risk of closure, due to a council cost cutting initiative, will remain open following public outcry.
Abbey House Museum, opposite Kirkstall Abbey, will remain open despite waning visitor numbers and Leeds City Council's plans to save £106.4million in its budget over the 2025/26 financial term, in a bid to support the rising costs of social care services.
There were 10,000 responses to the public consultation for it closure. Plans for upcoming events and exhibitions at the museum will continue. Leeds City Council adds: "However, savings still need to be made, and alternative options to secure the savings required are currently being reviewed."

Councillor Salma Arif, executive member for adult social care, active lifestyles and culture, said: “It was clear from ward members the strength of feeling locally, and this has been replicated from across Leeds in the consultation. As a result, we’re pleased to say the museum will stay open.
“What we need now is for people channel the passion and enthusiasm they have demonstrated during the consultation into visiting and engaging with the site as much as possible over the coming months so we can all work to support its future.”
