A Model Is Having Her legs Surgically Fractured So She Can Be Six Feet Tall
There's suffering for beauty and then there's this...
An aspiring model who was told she was too short for the catwalk has spent thousands of pounds on having her legs surgically lengthened.
Because fashion...
From the age of 14 years-old, Aleksandra Transer from the city of Volgograd in south-western Russia wanted to be a model.
But being just 5ft 4", she was nowhere near the 6ft that is usually required.
So she decided to take some pretty darn drastic measures to make sure she could "size up" for the next gig.
She said: "I had tried to get into modelling school when I was 17 but was told by the director that because I had stopped growing, the only way I would ever be the right height was if I grew leg extensions.
"So that’s exactly what I decided to do.
"At first my parents were really against it.
"My mum is only 5ft 2" and my dad is 5ft 5", so we are a family of shorties.
"But I had read about something called the Ilizarov apparatus which lengthens bones and that the Soviet high jump champion Valery Brumel had had this done in 1968, so I decided to work and save up money to have the operation done."
The Illizarov apparatus is usually used to treat badly deformed limbs or to help restructure bones after serious breakage.
Through manipulating a series of different "tensions", bones and soft tissues can be provoked to regenerate.
When it is used as a lengthening device, an operation is required to surgically fracture the bone and to attach the apparatus.
"Seeing that I was so determined, my parents gave in and agreed to support me."
Turning down a place at university, Alexandra went to work for her engineering dad as an assistant until she saved up the £6,000 that she needed.
Now 30-years-old, Aleksandra is also slightly taller.
She said: "The first operation went really well and in nine months I grew by 6cm.
"I am now planning two more operations in the next couple of years and by 2018 I will be 6ft.
"I’ll probably be told I'm too old to be a model by then, but I’ll dye my hair blonde and at least I will look and feel like one."
So...what? It was all for NOTHING?!
That doesn't sound like a particularly good deal to us!
