From '90s leopard print catsuits to the 'Pob', we chart the Spice Girls' epic style evolution

The 1995 Brit Awards

Many a group Halloween costume has been inspired by this very image. The Spice Girls made their debut Brit Awards appearance in what can only be described as their greatest looks to date.
We should have predicted Victoria Beckham’s future in fashion by her Phoebe Philo-esque mismatched shoes. While many a millennial would pay good money for Mel C’s ‘dad trainers’ RN… [Photo: Getty]

The 1997 MTV Awards

Just one year after launching ‘Wannabe’, the Spice Girls were globally recognised not only for their music but their now-famous wardrobes. The question is: where can we bag Geri’s coat? [Photo: Getty]

The 1997 Billboard Music Awards

Though we may have left Scary and Baby Spices’ platform boots in the nineties, the oversized blazer, leopard print co-ord and ‘ugly trainers’ are all on our AW18 shopping list. [Photo: Getty]

A royal meeting with Prince Charles in 1997

In a now-famous photocall with Prince Charles (who resembles every fan girl in this very image) – the pop group stuck to their sartorial guns. Sporty Spice wore protocol-breaking Kappa trackpants while Baby Spice donned failsafe pink (and her go-to bunches) for the regal meeting. [Photo: Getty]

What does a Spice Girl wear to meet the Queen?

In December 1997, the girl band met Her Majesty at the Victoria Palace theatre in some pretty protocol-breaking ensembles. We can’t help but wonder what the Queen made of Mel C’s highlights… [Photo: Getty]

The 1997 London premiere of ‘Spiceworld’

For the London premiere of hit film ‘Spiceworld’ in 1997, the girl band donned co-ordinating pinstriped suits. In a bizarre styling move, the pop group accessorised the look with canes – a move we won’t be replicating anytime soon. Each band member spiced up the look in keeping with their alter ego with Sporty teaming the suit with trainers while Posh opted for heels. [Photo: Getty]

The 1998 premiere of ‘Spice World’

For the 1998 Spice World premiere in Hollywood a year later, the girls returned to their fondness of matching suits. This time, the pop band dressed in head-to-toe white – though Mel C still managed to sneak a pair of trainers onto the red carpet. [Photo: Getty]

The year 2000 launch party for the ‘Forever’ album

Fast-forward to the year 2000 and the girl band were beginning to experiment with the decade’s now-cherished trends. Mel C can be seen donning a Burberry belt bag (so AW18) while Emma Bunton’s flared suit resembles a co-ord we saved on Instagram just yesterday… [Photo: Getty]

The Spice Girls make an unanticipated comeback

For their comeback tour in 2007, the Spice Girls gave their alter egos a noughties makeover. Victoria Beckham brought back the Pob while Mel C gave lessons in luxe athleisure. [Photo: Getty]

For their comeback tour in 2008, the band looked to designer Roberto Cavalli for sartorial assistance. Thankfully, Victoria Beckham still stuck to the ‘Pob’ while Mel B donned a utilitarian jumpsuit. [Photo: Getty]

The 2012 Olympic Games closing ceremony

Who better to represent the UK on a global scale than the Spice Girls? The last time the band performed as a four-piece group was in 2012 for the Olympic Games closing ceremony in London. [Photo: Getty]

The 2019 UK stadium tour announcement

After months of speculation, the Spice Girls finally announced their UK comeback tour on November 5 (albeit minus Victoria Beckham). Emma Bunton may have ditched the pigtails but paid tribute to her alter ego with bubblegum-tinged locks while Mel C gave her luxe tracksuit an upgrade in a red co-ord for the promo shot. Growing up, the only difficult decision millennials made after school was who got to be which Spice Girl in a hairbrush rendition of “2 Become 1”.

So you can imagine our excitement upon learning that the ’90s girl band (albeit minus Posh) are set to reunite for a UK stadium tour next year.

Famed for their alter egos (Posh, Scary, Sporty, Ginger and Baby) – the pop group inspired the wardrobes of thousands of teenage fans across the globe.

Patriotic mini dresses and knee-high boots were left to Geri Halliwell while fellow band member Emma Bunton was wholly responsible for our noughties penchant for we’re-definitely-too-old-for-these pigtails.

Whether it was their debut Brit Awards performance or the band’s nothing short of iconic meeting with Prince Charles, the pop group’s ensembles will forever remain etched in the sartorial history books.

From Mel B’s leopard print co-ords to Victoria Beckham‘s aptly-named ‘Pob’, we chart the Spice Girls’ fashion evolution.

You may be pleased to learn that a handful of trends have made a serious comeback for AW18 (you don’t want to throw out your Adidas tracksuit just yet)…
