We probably should have guessed that the supermarket that gave us the lasagne sandwich a few years ago would keep the tradition going with something a bit unusual on the sandwich section this Christmas. And they have. Tesco have sandwiched a glossy chocolate and cherry filling between two slices of cinnamon bread. They sent us some to taste - and they’re not as sweet as you think they’re going to be, although probably wouldn’t work very well with a packet of prawn cocktail crisps alongside. Kind of like Black Forest and Christmas flavours. In a sandwich. Look out for them in Tesco stores.
Sweet Potato Liqueur

Never heard of booze being made from sweet potatoes? Sounds crazy (and pretty delicious, if we’re honest). That’s exactly what The Sweet Potato Spirit Company have done. The liqueur is available online in flavours such as Raspberry, Orangecello, Spiced Rum and Moonshine. Something different for a Christmas Eve tipple.

If Halloween is pumpkin spice-flavoured then at Christmas time, gingerbread takes over. And The Collective have added to their range with this thick and luxurious limited edition Gingerbread Yoghurt. They say that the yoghurt was inspired by seasonal gingerbread biscuits and Jamaican ginger cake and that it has “a double layer of golden brown spiced compote that balances the sweetness of soft brown sugar with fragrant notes of seasonal stem ginger, ground spice and cinnamon.” I couldn’t resist a taste - it’s actually really good, with sweet and spicy, bold flavours and a real Christmassy warmth. The yoghurt also contains live cultures so it’s good for your tum, too.
The Sprout Pizza

Anyone ever wished for the day when they could go out and feast on a Brussels sprout pizza? Well you’re in luck. Pizza Express have developed two pizzas for the festive season - both topped with sprouts. There’s the Sprout and Pancetta Romana pizza, topped with garlic and rosemary-roasted sprouts, pancetta, chestnut mushrooms, pine kernels and red onion with a free-range egg. The meat-free version takes out the pancetta and features truffle oil for a luxurious touch. The pizzas were launched in restaurants last month and are on the menu until the New Year.
Duck Eclairs

They look (a bit) like regular chocolate eclairs, but that’s not chocolate drizzled over the top. Tesco again, and they’ve filled eclair-shaped dough with shredded duck and added a hoisin sauce-style glaze that you squeeze on top after baking. They don’t take long to heat up, and although the sauce I drizzled over was a bit messier than in their pictures, they went down well and vanished pretty quickly. Look out for them in Tesco stores in the lead up to the big day.

Paul A. Young has given us some incredible chocolate treats - the Stilton and chocolate sandwich, for one. This Christmas, his chocolate collection includes the Mulled Brew Dog Beer, Peppermint Crunch and Port & Stilton. There’s also the Kirsch Cherry Caramel, Nutmeg, Milk, Honey, Snowball Cocktail and Glen Moray Cream Caramel. Sounds gorgeous, yes? Perfect for nibbling on in front of a Christmas film.

More gingerbread. And now’s your chance to try gingerbread-flavoured popcorn. Butterkist has developed a limited edition gingerbread popcorn - it’s covered in a sweet toffee as per the usual but has a light gingerbread flavour to it, too. Not as strong as you’d expect perhaps - it’s quite subtle, meaning the flavour of the actual popcorn comes through first. You can get it at Tesco, Sainsburys and Morrison’s - look out for special offers in store.
What unusual Christmas treats are on your shopping list this Christmas? Gingerbread everything? Sprout pizzas?
