You may think dressing to the nines for holiday dinners in your own home is ridiculous, but I’ve personally sat in my living room in a floor-length faux fur coat. With that said, I’m definitely tapping into the 2024 holiday dressing trends to curate my look for all my upcoming seasonal festivities. To make sure I hit the mark, I reached out to fashion stylist Alexa Rittman to pinpoint the major trends we’ll see this season. She named suede, leather, red and burgundy, leopard print, metallics, and statement earrings as themes we’ll see across holiday parties and celebratory dinners.

Suede
“Suede is a great way to add texture and warmth to any outfit for fall, especially your Thanksgiving look,” says Rittman. She highlights suede’s “classic, timeless appeal that never goes out of style.” She says the versatile fabric also works for a range of holiday events, from casual family gatherings to more formal parties—just try to avoid food spills.

Rittman’s Amazon fashion pick is this Cropped Suede Motorcycle Jacket from Blanknyc that you can layer over a dress to warm up or pair it with boots, like this style from Coach, or this leg-accentuating option that goes over the knee. I personally slot suede in with my handbags, and this Jw Pei Hana Faux Suede Tote Bag is on my wishlist for holiday styling.

Bold Red and Burgundy
Reds and burgundies are Rittman’s favorite trends for fall and winter. She notes their ability to “transition to warmer tones for the season” and provide vibrant pops of color for the holidays. She explains that red shades can be styled in a range of ways, from deep, rich burgundies to bright, bold hues. “Whether you choose a red dress, a red sweater, or a red boot, it’s a color that pairs well with other holiday hues like gold, silver, white, and green.”

If you’re looking to implement the eye-catching shade in a subtle way, I suggest this cozy cardigan from Sézane or go for a versatile accessory with Cuyana’s Ola Bag.

Metallics
Rittman shared that silver and metallic pieces “add depth and interest to any look.” Think: metallic sneakers or a casual top for family get-togethers and metallic dresses, skirts, or blazers for more formal events. The dazzling trend is perfect for Christmas dinners and New Year’s Eve parties “without being overly flashy.”

Statement Earrings
You can take a drab outfit to the next level with a pair of head-turning statement earrings. Rittman suggests pairing them with simple options, like a classic black dress or a solid top, allowing the earrings to “do all the talking.” It’s an ideal way to “add personality to your look without going over the top.”

Leopard Print
Like the bold shade of red that’s taken over the season, I’m loving the resurgence of leopard print—especially as a holiday option. “Leopard is a bold and timeless pattern,” Rittman shares. She mentions that her favorite way to incorporate the trend is through “accessories, like belts and flats,” but for the daring souls, “leopard denim and satin skirts” are sure to stop traffic.

Faux Leather
Faux leather brings both “style and functionality” to the busy season, says Rittman. She emphasizes its “classic, sophisticated appeal” that can elevate any outfit, from jackets to skirts or boots. “It’s versatile enough to be dressed up or down,” and it pairs effortlessly with other holiday textiles like velvet, silk, or sequins, adding a bit of edge to any holiday ensemble.

My leather preference is going towards accessories, and Coach’s Brooklyn Shoulder Bag 28, which has taken over my TikTok FYP, is on my wishlist. I also love the idea of styling faux leather leggings with a pair of boots, like these options from Vince Camuto, for a moodier vibe.
