5 Things Everyone in London Will Be Wearing This Fall
When it comes to style, we can’t help but bow down (royal pun intended) to the trend-setting Brits across the pond. But what wardrobe advice can we borrow from them for our own attire this fall? We dialed our favorite London-based fashionista, Bethan Holt, fashion director at The Telegraph and author of the recent book The Queen: 70 Years of Majestic Style, to get the sartorial scoop on the best British-loved pieces to add to your closet.

1. A Statement Coat
Per Holt, last year, Londoners were all about Totême’s fringed scarf jacket, and that moment isn’t over yet. “It’s a gorgeous style, which creates an instant ‘look,’” says Holt—and that’s the goal. Think of it as the coat version of a one-and-done ensemble: Maybe it comes with a scarf built in, maybe it’s available in an eye-catching hue. It’s functional and fashionable (and takes even the most basic ensemble to the next level), a win-win.

2. Heeled Boots
Sure, chunky, stompy boots have been the practical (and durable) choice for years, but Holt tells us she’s seeing the return of more elegant footwear for fall. Her most coveted style: Khaite’s Dallas boots, which are a modern and ladylike take on a cowboy boot. “I find that adding a new boot to an old outfit is one of the easiest ways to make it feel fresh again,” Holt says.

3. Overalls
In London, dungarees (overalls, to Americans), are having a serious moment, says Holt, who loves them for their forgiving waistline and seasonal flexibility. “I’ve been wearing them with T-shirts on cooler summer days, but they’ll really come into their own when temperatures drop, worn either with a statement feminine blouse or a turtleneck,” she says.

4. The ‘Duchess Dress’
Holt can confirm: Kate Middleton is still many a British woman’s favorite style inspiration. “I love all the Alessandra Rich dresses the Duchess of Cambridge has worn recently and I think there will be versions everywhere for the coming season,” she says. An example? “I’d love this gold-buttoned sailor style to find its way into my wardrobe,” Holt adds.

5. Investment Basics
There’s a real trend toward sustainability for London women and a wardrobe of timeless, staple pieces that they can pull out season after season, Holt explains. “Whether it’s a masculine shirt—like this one from With Nothing Underneath—or tailored trousers and blazers (everyone here stocks up at Cos and Arket), it’s all about building that foundation and then adding a few special pieces to make it feel right for now,” she says.
