One of my favorite cities to visit is New Orleans. It’s hard to beat the energy, the people, and the food found in the Crescent City. I love it so much that I’ve adopted many of the city’s food traditions, including making red beans and rice on Mondays, even if I’m not within walking distance of Bourbon Street. Another way I add bold flavor to my meals is with a buttery sauce infused with Cajun seasoning when I want to jazz up things like cooked chicken breast. This Cajun honey butter sauce has just four ingredients and comes together in just 15 minutes. But don’t let its simplicity fool you — this sauce has it all. There’s lots of spice, a floral sweetness, and a smooth, buttery finish.

Why You’ll Love It

  • There’s bold Cajun flavor. Look to Louisiana for the right combination of robust spices to infuse honey butter sauce with big, bold flavor.

  • Serve as a sauce or a dip! Turn to this sauce whenever dinner needs a flavor boost. You can serve it as a dipping sauce for roasted shrimp, brush over oven-baked salmon, or drizzle over crisp-tender broccoli.

Key Ingredients in Cajun Honey Butter Sauce

  • Butter: Use unsalted butter, as the Cajun seasoning blends provide all of the salt needed for this dip. European-style butter has a higher butterfat content and gives the sauce a brighter color and more stable consistency, but regular butter will also work.

  • Cajun seasoning: Add bold flavor with a store-bought or homemade Cajun seasoning. If your seasoning blend is salt-free, add salt to taste.

  • Honey: Adds body and sweetness to balance the Cajun spice.

  • Lemon juice: Just 1 teaspoon of lemon juice brightens the sauce’s flavor.

  1. Bring 2 tablespoons water to a simmer in a small skillet or saucepan over medium-low heat. Reduce the heat to low. Whisk in 1 stick cold unsalted butter a tablespoon at a time, whisking until each piece is almost melted before adding the next. Do not let the butter boil or it will separate.

  2. Whisk in 1 tablespoon Cajun seasoning, 2 tablespoons honey, and 1 teaspoon lemon juice. Taste and whisk in more lemon juice as needed. Serve warm.

Recipe Notes

Storage: This butter sauce is best made right before serving, but you can refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container for up to 4 days. Reheat in a small saucepan over low heat until completely melted and warm; do not let it boil. Remove from the heat. Drizzle in cool water 1 teaspoon at a time while whisking vigorously, until the sauce is creamy and emulsified again.
