These African Matabele ants are carrying a wounded nestmate after a battle with termites.

The rescue behaviour is triggered when the injured ant excretes a chemical substance, calling for help.

Inside the nest, 'nurse ants' intensively lick the wounds, applying antimicrobial substances with their saliva, inhibiting infections.

Without such treatment, 80% of the injured die.
