Picking a baby name can be one of the trickiest decisions for parents-to-be. Particularly when baby name regret is an actual thing. Whether you look to celebs for namespo, want something a little hipster or opt for a moniker so ‘unique’ no one’s ever heard of it, it pays to choose wisely or your baby could end up appearing on the ‘bogan’ names list. Er, what?

Back in 2014, a list of the best ‘bogan’ names was compiled by Kidspot in Australia. The list quickly went viral sparking prickly debates all over the internet, and now the 2017 edition has been released with 20 names making the tongue-in-cheek list.

Urban Dictionary describes the term bogan as, “A fascinating beast. The majority of the species are hideously repugnant and unintelligent, and yet they manage to breed in ever-increasing numbers and populate an area known as the outer west.” Nice!

But Sabrina Rogers-Anderson, who has seen her original list now become an entire book, ‘The Little Book of Bogan Baby Names’, hopes parents will take the compilation in the light-hearted spirited it was meant.

“Most readers have taken my bogan musings as they were intended – a good-natured laugh. We all have a bit of bogan in us that needs to be celebrated. Truth be told, I can’t help but like some of these names just a little bit,” she writes.

So what are 2017’s most bogan baby names? Many of the names on the list are reboots of more common names like HARISYN, typically spelt Harrison and JAKXSEN, usually Jackson. “Perhaps these parents were really concerned we wouldn’t know how to pronounce the “cks” in Jackson, so they decided to assault us with it three ways? My brain does not enjoy this,” writes Rogers-Anderson.

But the author’s particular favourite has to be WYLIUMM. “This distorted spelling makes me consider signing up for anger management classes,” she says. “Is it normal for me to feel this upset over someone else’s lack of judgement?”

Unusual spellings of popular girls names also make the list. Welcome to the world baby Feebi.

Other names making the list see two names combined to form one unique moniker, Jarren, for example, which is a combination of the names Jarrod and Darren.

Then there’s Kendrew for a boy and Alize for a girl which makes the list not just because it messes a perfectly good girls name, but also because of the way it is pronounced – ‘Ah-lee-zay’ which has led Rogers-Anderson to claim the name “is about as bogan as baby names get.”

Picking names for things is also a no go, according to the author. Step forward Dijon, as in the mustard, while words spelt backwards are also considered bogan. Last year’s Nevaeh (Heaven spelt backwards) has been replaced with the not so divine Enivid.

Then there’s names that add a random letter twist to perfectly normal words, Laken for example. “I find nature names such as Cedar, Falcon and Lake a bit odd as it is, but adding a random “N” to Lake makes it worse,” explains Rogers-Anderson.
