A train has derailed creating a huge fireball in Quebec, Canada - destroying homes and businesses and causing mass devastation.

At least one person is confirmed dead with the death toll likely to rise.

The 73 carriage driverless train was carrying crude oil which - according to the Globe and Mail "detonated like a bomb", sparking a series of explosions. The fire destroyed 30 buildings including a packed bar, apartments and the town's library. Locals told the newspaper that survival "depended on where you happened to be standing".

At least 1,000 were forced to flee their homes and dozens remain missing in what was described by witnesses as a war zone.

Vice president of Montreal, Main & Atlantic who own the train, told CTVNews that the train's conductor was at a hotel in Lac-Megantic when the accident happened and is now being questioned by police.
