Golden highlights and cropped ‘dos are obvious staples when it comes to summer hair, but one of the most essential accessories has to be your standard baseball cap. While it’s perfect for a grab-and-go situation—or day three (or four…) hair—you can also elevate your look with chic hairstyles to wear with a baseball cap. We asked professional stylists about their favorite ways to dress up a baseball hat and best pro tips for keeping your strands healthy in the process.
Cute Baseball Cap Hat Hairstyles
Simple Pony
When in doubt, keep it simple with a straightforward ponytail slung through the open space at the back of the cap. Celebrity stylist Ricardo Rojas says this is one of his favorites, and that you can elevate the look even further with a great pair of sunglasses. Best of all, it works with every hair texture.
Voluminous Pony
For a quick spin on the standard pony, grab a claw clip. Pull about half of your hair through the open section, twist it upward, and then wrap the lower section up and over the top section. This creates the illusion of longer, fuller hair.
Fluffy Low Bun
To keep your hair off your neck, try a fluffy low bun. Bubble a small section of hair through the open space, then create a low ponytail with the rest and wrap it around the bubbled part for a fuller look. Just make sure to use a soft scrunchy versus a tight elastic since “the repetitive use of those often creates breakage along the hair strand,” says celebrity stylist Chaz Dean.
Flared Ends
If you’ve got a cropped ‘do then this one’s for you. After applying heat protectant, use a flat iron to flair out the ends of your hair. This prevents your hair from sticking to your face and creates a flattering shape.
Braided Pony
Dean says you can’t go wrong with braids and a baseball cap. A simple option that lends itself well to all sorts of occasions is to pull your hair through the open section, then create a simple three-strand braid.
Double Braids
Of course, there are always double braids with a baseball cap. This keeps most of your hair toward the front of your face and off the back of your neck, which is both flattering and comfortable in high temps. Bonus: “It creates great waves for a second look if you decide later on,” Dean says.
Bubble Pigtails
For a spin on braided pigtails, try your hand at this bubbled option. It creates some fun texture and really dresses up a cap. The secret to getting that volume is lightly tugging at each section to pull the pieces further apart.
Short Hair Clip Bun
Shorts can also wear their hair with a little clip to keep it off their neck. Bubble a small section through the opening of the cap, then twist the rest of your hair up and secure with a small clip. The bubble gives it something to grab onto.
Low Topsy Turvy
Want a 2-minute hairdo? Try this low topsy turvy style. Secure hair into a low ponytail, then create a small space and pull the ponytail under, up, and through the opening. Repeat one or two times.
Looped Pigtail Braids
Try the same topsy turvy idea as above, but with two braids on either side versus a singular idea. This is great for medium and long hair lengths and switches things up from a standard pony or pigtail situation.
Twisted Side Bun
Dean says another one of his favorite baseball hat hairstyles is to create a low bun. He says to make it work, you’ll need to secure the bun directly under the hat’s edge, otherwise it ends up getting smooshed.
Knotted Bun
You can also pull all your hair through the back opening of the hat, then create a bun that sits on top of the adjustable strap. This version is knotted, which creates more volume and texture.
Tucked Hair with Claw Clip
Another way to get all your hair off your neck is to hold everything up with a sturdy claw clip. Create a bubbled section in the hat opening, then twist the remaining hair up and around before securing.
