Corgis might be small dogs, but they have big personalities. Many know them by their short legs and long bodies, but they are so much more than that. Originally bred as herding dogs, corgis are popular family dogs because they are outgoing, adaptable, loyal, and an all-around joy to own. And if you've ever considered owning a corgi, there are also many corgi mixes available as well.

"Corgis are nature’s most adorable contradiction with their short, little legs and big ears. They are also affectionate, loving dogs who form strong bonds with their humans," says Dr. Sam Meisler, veterinarian and founder of PetWellClinic. "Their sweet, adaptable nature makes them excellent for families with small children and other pets. Equal opportunists, Corgis love humans and pets in equal measure."

Today, there are more than 50 types of corgi mixes, and while they are all different, many still hold on to the corgi characteristics of their parentage. Queen Elizabeth II was very fond of the breed, owning more than 30 corgis in her lifetime. She was fond of Pembroke Welsh corgis, but there are also Cardigan Welsh corgis. The difference lies in the breed's coat colors and texture.

If you're considering adding a corgi or a corgi mix to your household, check out your local shelters or rescues first, as many dogs are awaiting their forever home. Read on for 15 of the best corgi mixes to add to your family.

Corgis are known for their small legs, log bodies, and big ears, but they are so much more than their adorable appearance. Originally raised as herding dogs, corgis are an affectionate, loyal, and smart breed that does well with pets and children. Aside from full-blooded corgis, corgi mixes offer many of the same qualities.

“Corgis are an alert, intelligent breed, with historical roots as working dogs, making them well bonded to humans and highly trainable. They are exceptionally affectionate and well adapted to family life,” says Dr. Jennifer Sperry, veterinarian and spokesperson for AKC Pet Insurance. “Corgis are large dogs on little legs, making them a little less fragile in homes with children compared to miniature and toy breeds. Their fluffy coats and alert ears give them an adorable teddy bear look.”

The American Kennel Club recognizes two types of corgis — the Pembroke Welsh corgi and the Cardigan Welsh corgi. The difference lies in the color and texture of their coats. Queen Elizabeth II was famous for owning more than 30 corgis in her lifetime. At her death, her two Pembroke Welsh corgis, Sandy and Muinck, had a full run of Windsor Castle.

More than 50 different corgi mixes exist today, and while they may have different parentage, they still retain many of the favorable qualities of the dog breed. Read on to find out more about 15 of the best corgi mixes.
