10 packing must-haves for your next cruise, according to travel expert Samantha Brown

10 packing must-haves for your next cruise, according to travel expert Samantha Brown

Got a cruise on the horizon? You're going to want to chat with travel expert Samantha Brown before you embark. The two-time Emmy award-winning host of Places to Love has spent 20 years exploring the world (what a dream!) and been to 65 countries, but hosting cruises is her speciality. Brown has set sail in the Mediterranean, Caribbean, Alaska — you name it. So when it comes to packing for one of these floating resorts, she's a pro.

"I always travel with a large, checked bag, a carry-on and a personal item for cruises," says Brown about her overall packing strategy. "You’ll check your large piece but you still want to have a small bag of essentials that will allow you to get your vacation started, like your bathing suit, sunglasses, sunscreen, essential toiletries. Your larger piece won’t be delivered to your cabin until before dinner."

As for clothes, Brown says to brief yourself on the weather and ask about the ship's dress code. "Most cruises have gone totally casual, but make sure! Some luxury cruises do ask that men have at least a dinner jacket. But regardless, always bring one spiffy outfit. It’s fun to get all dressed up and go for cocktails, dinner and dancing," she adds. She also suggests finding out whether the cruise organizers are distributing a 'What to Pack' list.

Beyond that, we asked Brown which specific items she considers most essential for a ocean-bound getaway, and she logged the 10 things below. Update your packing list accordingly, and enjoy the journey!

"No matter where you’re going, a waterproof (not just -resistant) rain jacket" is essential, says Brown. Amazon has a slew of affordable options that include travel-friendly features like the ability to be packed into a small, portable case, as is the case with this hooded number that comes in 25 colors and patterns.

Remember that "snazzy" outfit Brown mentioned? It doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg. Head straight to Amazon for this top-rated, wrap-inspired evening gown that's flowy, ruffly and has a flattering A-line shape. It comes in bold colors like burgundy and emerald green or neutrals like black and navy, and it has a touch of spandex for comfort.

"Have at least $100 to $500 dollars in cash" while aboard, says Brown. "Tipping is very important, and although you can add the tip to your bill, sometimes you want to show other crew members just how appreciative you are of their very hard work."

Samantha's own accessories line for HSN includes this stylish wallet to hold your bills and more. It's perfect for travel because it's RFID-blocking, meaning it thwarts potential remote skimming of your credit and debit cards.

Brown says she loves these for cruises, because "all doors on cruise ships are metal as a fire precaution. These small hooks allow you keep things easily off the floor."

Each powder-coated steel hook is strong enough to hold up to 30 pounds, and there are enough for everyone's jackets, bags and more.

Non-slip, rubber-soled shoes are a necessity on a ship, according to Brown. "Walkways can get slippery," she says. We can't think of a better all-purpose cruise shoe than this Rothy's dupe on Amazon. Like the brand-name version, it's made of breathable mesh, it's packable and you can pop it in the washing machine.

The round-toe shoe comes in a bunch of colors, and most of them are on sale.

In addition to your regular medications (don't forget them!), Brown advises bringing dramamine in case of sea sickness. And to try to avoid sea sickness, "book a stateroom in the middle of the ship," she advises.

She also suggests packing the essentials from your medicine cabinet: ibuprofen, acetaminophen, cold medication, and antacids, to name a few. Brown says those meds are more expensive on a cruise ship, and if you're traveling abroad, they might have names you don't recognize.

A travel pill organizer lets you keep it all contained and easy to access.

"Water is expensive," Brown emphasizes, and she recommends a double-wall insulated bottle like this one on Amazon that comes in sizes starting at one quart and going all the way up to 128 ounces. Fill it up and the bottle will keep the water cold all day. It even has a straw, just in case cups aren't handy.

If you're going to Europe in the summer — or a warm-weather destination in any season — a cooling towel will help, Brown says. "They really work — just soak them, wring them out and lay across your neck."

This set of four will hit the spot. Each towel comes with its own carrying pouch and carabiner clip. And you can wash them by hand or in the machine.

A stylish sun hat is a must. "There’s a lot of wind when you’re on the water. It keeps your hair out of your eyes, and you’ll look good in your pictures," says Brown.

This floppy straw hat is obviously very cute, but it's also packable and has UPF 80+ sun protection. It even has an adjustable chin strap, you know, for those strong winds Brown mentioned!

Think about it: coffee, tea, alcohol and possible heat/sun exposure. That's a recipe for dehydration, and why Brown says to keep these packets handy. They're massively popular on Amazon with almost 200,000 five-star reviews! Choose from vacation-y flavors like passion fruit, pina colada and strawberry lemonade. Adding these powders to your water creates an ultra-hydrating drink that helps replenish your electrolytes.

If you have Amazon Prime, you’ll get free shipping, of course. Not yet a member? No problem. You can sign up for your free 30-day trial here. (And by the way, those without Prime still get free shipping on orders of $35 or more.)
