10 Most Expensive Homes Sold in the US in 2024

Luxury real estate was hot, hot, hot in 2024. As reported by luxury-lifestyle magazine Robb Report, the year’s most expensive real estate deal was a $210 million California estate while the 10th-place spot was a mansion purchased for $87 million in Florida.

The luxury housing market’s top buyers and sellers ranged from Amazon executive chairman Jeff Bezos to entrepreneurs such as James Jannard, founder of Oakley sunglasses. California and Florida also reigned supreme as the states with the most markets for million-dollar housing deals.

1.  Malibu, California: $210 Million

Businessman James Jannard reportedly sold his cliffside Malibu property for $210 million in 2024, an estate spanning 9 1/2 acres and nearly 20,000 square feet.

According to Robb Report, Jannard purchased his home for $31 million in 2001. This means he earned $179 million from the sale — a 577% return on investment in 23 years.

2. Palm Beach, Florida: $152 Million

Last year, an undisclosed buyer snagged Tarpon Island in Palm Beach, Florida, for $152 million.

What makes this transaction especially monumental is the buyer purchased the entire private island at a discount. Its original listing price of $210 million in 2021 raised to $218 million once mega-mansion construction began, dropped to $187.5 million after construction was completed and sold for $152 million to the buyer.

3. Palm Beach, Florida: $148 Million

Billionaire investor Daren Metropoulos not only acquired landmarked beach house Casa Amado for $148 million in 2024, but he reportedly paid for the oceanfront property entirely in cash.

4. New York City: $135 Million

The most expensive sale in New York City went to a five-story penthouse at the Aman Hotel that closed for $135 million in July 2024.

Described by Robb Report as a “mansion-sized unit,” the penthouse spans 12,536 square feet and features two swimming pools, a private elevator and a wraparound terrace.

5. New York City: $115 Million

Interesting enough, the penthouse residence that sold for this million-plus amount was originally listed at $175 million in March 2023. This listed price was later cut to $149.5 million, meaning the undisclosed buyer was able to receive a discount of $34.5 million for this seven-bedroom, eight-bathroom property.

6. Aspen, Colorado: $108 Million

Real estate developer Steve Wynn sold his 11-bedroom, 15-bathroom Aspen estate for $108 million in 2024. According to Robb Report, it’s the most expensive home sale in the state of Colorado.

7. Carpinteria, California: $96 Million

Former talk show host Ellen DeGeneres and her wife, Portia de Rossi, sold their 10-acre estate in Carpinteria to billionaire Robert Friedland for $96 million in 2024.

Per Robb Report, DeGeneres earned $26 million off the sale as the property was originally purchased for $70 million.

8. Malibu, California: $94 Million

Laurene Powell Jobs, businesswoman and widow of Steve Jobs, made headlines after purchasing an oceanfront estate in Malibu’s Paradise Cove for $94 million.

The Los Angeles Times reported it was completed off-market and marked Jobs’ fourth property purchase in the last decade.

9. Los Angeles: $92.8 Million

Entrepreneur George Ruan made headlines in 2024 for the sale of his 20,000-square-foot Bel Air home.

If you’re looking at this price and feeling as though you recall it was more expensive, you’re right. Ruan had originally listed the 14-bedroom property for $150 million, but Robb Report said it later sold for much less after two years on the market.

10. Indian Creek Island, Florida: $87 Million

Amazon executive chairman Jeff Bezos shelled out $87 million in April 2024 on his third property in Miami’s Indian Creek Island.

The third mansion to join Bezos’ “Billionaire Bunker” portfolio spans 10,000 square feet and features six bedrooms, a swimming pool, a putting green and a boat dock.
