This New Zealand House Along the Pohutukawa Coast Rotates 360 Degrees
The design of this newly listed home in Auckland, New Zealand, will make your head spin—literally.
Dubbed The Lighthouse, the three-bedroom spread positioned along the picturesque Pohutukawa Coast has a trick up its sleeve—it rotates 360 degrees. The seaside stunner was designed and built in the ‘90s by owner and engineer Don Dunick. Once set into motion, the innovative structure can make a full spin in just 33 minutes, capturing views of the shimmering sea and green forest.

“It’s quite subtle, and it takes a few minutes to get used to it. One minute you’re looking at lush bush and the next minute you’re looking at the ocean,” listing agent Carolyn Hanson of New Zealand Sotheby’s International Realty tells Stuff. The stately residence is being sold for the first time in its history through a tender process, meaning prospective buyers will have until 4 pm on March 24 to make a written offer. The seller is asking between NZ$1.5 million (or $929,941) and NZ$2 million (about $1.2 million).
Dunick’s journey to creating the one-of-a-kind abode was a project five years in the making, The Guardian reported. He told the British daily newspaper that he originally got the idea from his engineering coworkers and enlisted the bunch to help construct the one-of-a-kind pad. As it stands, The Lighthouse is propped on a cylindrical steel base—kind of like a carousel—and all of the water, electricity, and sewage piping had to be installed independently to allow the house to move freely.
“The advantage is that you can change the view, you can change the sun, you can get out of the wind or into the wind…If there is a storm coming at night [and] you don’t want that on your bedroom windows, you turn it,” Dunick told The Guardian.
Inside, you’ll find floor-to-ceiling windows wrapped around the entire house, along with two circular viewing decks on the upper and lower levels that are lined with artificial grass. The common areas, including the kitchen and living room, are on the first floor, along with the bedrooms. A grand spiral staircase leads to the second floor, which holds a bar—ideally suited for sunset cocktails.
The listing suggests the place would make for an epic Airbnb, a permanent residence, or just a super unique vacation home for out-of-towners. And it would. Buyers, it’s your turn.
