The designer will work with the retailer as a "cultural curator and creative partner," per a press release. Posen's design career spans more than 25 years, and encompasses ready-to-wear, couture and costume design (most recently, in "Feud: Capote Vs. The Swans").
"Gap Inc. and its brands have shaped American fashion and pop culture for decades, and there's so much potential at Old Navy. I'm eager to join Gap Inc. as brand reinvigoration kicks up across the portfolio, rooted in great product, experiences, and a new culture of creativity," Posen said in a statement.
The 43-year-old designer, who recently spoke with Fashionista about his career and recent work on Fireside, is an alum of Parsons and Central Saint Martins. While still in school, he experienced a fast-moving rise to fame following a story featuring his dress on Paz de la Huerta. This led him to debut an eponymous label (which he no longer owns or designs for) and to become a celebrity-favorite to wear on the red carpet. Working with Gap Inc. marks the latest pivot in Posen's career since leaving his namesake brand.

Richard Dickson said in a statement announcing the news. "His technical expertise and cultural clarity have consistently evolved American fashion, making him a great fit for the company as we ignite a new culture of creativity across the portfolio and reinvigorate our storied brands."
Gap Inc.'s previous creative director, Len Peltier, reportedly stepped down last August. Posen's appointment not only clues into Gap's strategy in repositioning itself post-Kanye fiasco, but it also affirms how brands are leaning on celebrities and well-known names to lead creative.
